OPTRONTEC Inc. reported second-quarter revenue of 60.7 billion won and operating profit of 2.6 billion won, the company said August 14. Revenue increased 36.2% from a year earlier, while operating profit rose 260.4%. Operating margin improved to 4.4% from 1.6%. OPTRONTEC's official English name is OPTRONTEC Inc.
OPTRONTEC's cumulative revenue for the first half was 121.8 billion won, up 32.6% from 91.9 billion won a year earlier. Operating profit surged 407.2% to 7.1 billion won from 1.4 billion won. Operating margin rose to 5.8% from 1.5%. The company improved profitability by keeping selling, general and administrative expenses at 13.6 billion won, similar to the previous year, despite the increase in revenue.
By product, optical zoom modules generated 58.9 billion won in first-half revenue, accounting for 48.3% of total sales. Filters for image sensors generated 34.2 billion won, or 28.1%, while optical lenses and modules accounted for 25.6 billion won, or 21%.
The company supplied new film filters for premium smartphones, while demand for optical lenses and modules for closed-circuit television (CCTV) and automotive cameras remained steady. OPTRONTEC is pursuing production-efficiency improvements and cost reductions, centered on its manufacturing subsidiary in Vietnam.
Optical image stabilization (OIS) actuators are being mass-produced at the Vietnam subsidiary. Profit contribution in the first half was limited as the company was still in the early stages of sequentially establishing new assembly lines. It plans to increase productivity through line expansion and process optimization.
OPTRONTEC had expected to begin supplying automotive optical components in the first quarter, but the timing of hardware deliveries was shifted to the second quarter because of software update schedules at North American automakers. The company is preparing to resume supplies in the second half as demand for optical components for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) remains steady.
OPTRONTEC has also recently secured a purchase order (PO) for mass production of optical components for military drones from a European defense company. The company is expanding its business structure, centered on mobile and automotive applications, into optical components for defense.
An OPTRONTEC official said, "The first-half results reflected balanced growth in our existing core businesses of optical zoom and image-sensor filters. OIS and automotive components have yet to make a full contribution to earnings, while the defense business is also at an early stage, leaving sufficient room for additional growth."
