Apple’s iconic iPhone X is now obsolete. Released in 2017, it was the first iPhone to feature an OLED display, Face ID and a bezel-less design.

The iPhone X’s design ultimately laid the foundation for every flagship iPhone that followed for years.

Apple retires an iconic iPhone

Apple typically marks a product as obsolete seven years after it stopped distributing the device for sale. Once a device is marked obsolete, Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers no longer offer hardware repairs or order replacement parts for it (via Apple support page).

So, if you are still using an iPhone X, getting it officially repaired is no longer possible. Your only option now is to get the device repaired by a third-party service provider. But even then, finding genuine replacement parts can be a challenge.

Apple dropped support for the iPhone X with iOS 17 in 2023. The last major OS update for the device was iOS 16, which introduced a customizable Lock Screen with widgets, Focus mode and an overhauled Notification Centre.

The iPhone X dramatically changed Apple’s smartphone lineup. It introduced the $999 starting price, which at that point seemed unusually high.

More importantly, its removal of the Home button and Touch ID led to a major change in how users interact with their iPhones using gesture navigation. Almost a decade later, Face ID and gesture navigation still remain a staple of the iPhone lineup.

2018 MacBook Pro also marked as obsolete

Alongside the iPhone X, Apple also marked the 2018 MacBook Pro as obsolete. Like the iPhone, it means the laptop is no longer eligible for hardware repairs from Apple. In some cases, Apple may provide an extended battery-only repair for up to 10 years, but that depends on parts availability.
