The first major content update for World of Warcraft: Midnight is almost here, bringing us the Curse of Ula'tek and the chance to finally explore the Coiled Isle. Following along with the story of a sibling disagreement that threatens to destroy the world, we help Zul'jarra chase after Zul'jan to try to bring him home to Zul'Aman. That's a lot of Zul's, but also a chance to explore a stunning new area full of snakes and poisonous waters.

With the Curse of Ula'tek arriving on August 11, ScreenRant had the chance to talk to several of the developers who worked on this content update. Associate Game Director Paul Kubit, Lead Quest Designer Rachel Vought, and Lead Encounter Designers Taylor Sanders and Andrew De Sousa all took some time to chat with me about everything they're excited for players to see in this Troll-focused adventure in the midst of WoW: Midnight's storyline.

The Story Of Curse Of Ula'tek Ties Into Midnight This Isn't Just A Random One-Off Storyline
ZulJarra and ZulJan for WoW Midnight Curse of UlaTek

Because the story that's been going on in the WoW: Worldsoul Saga trilogy feels heavily focused on Xal'atath, it can almost feel like this sudden focus on the Amani Trolls and everything happening on the Coiled Isle can be a bit off-topic. However, the story of this update is much more important than we may realize.

Rachel Vought said, "We're in the middle of a three-part story, and the thing about Midnight is it's not just a story about Xal'atath and the Void, it's about the World Soul, and it's way bigger. For Midnight, we reintroduced Silvermoon, Eversong, and Zul'Aman. We reimagined these zones, and so they are part of Midnight.

One of the exciting things about it is we get to delve deeper into the story of the Blood Elves and now the Amani, and we have set up this critical chapter with Zul'jan and Zul'jarra, and the conflicts that have arisen from their different points of view on where the Amani should go.

And then, and this is not necessarily a spoiler, but after the start of Season 2, we're also going to team up with Arator to continue the hunt for Xal'atath specifically, and we'll learn more about the consequences of the actions that we take through the story of Curse of Elune."

Paul Kubit added, "It can feel like a patch like this is summer camp sometimes. It's like we're moving away from the Void to go to something which is a little bit different. It's green as opposed to purple, and speaking frankly, there's a lot of value in terms of making sure that you do have a breath of fresh air. Or a breath of toxic, noxious, poisonous air."

Kubit went on to explain that this update gives players some variety, with new enemies and combat profiles to fight, and new landscapes to view. Ultimately, however, this is "important in the chain of events that are the World Soul Saga and the Midnight story."

This Story Of Ula'tek Features Some Very Cool Lore With More To Come

One of the things that Vought is most excited about for this content update is the story.

Vought shared, "we get to learn more about the Amani before they were a major empire. We see them face this impossibly strong foe and then desperately raise this terrible creature to defeat it. And when I say we get to see it, like we get to actually play it like we were there ourselves and live it through the eyes of the trolls who were there, and we get some really cool lore out of it.

Plus, a little biased, I'm also looking forward to the Arator questline that comes out after Season 2 starts, because there is a sort of bonkers sequence in there where we go through some things with Arator and Umbric, and I'm excited for folks to see the final result of that."

Will The Amani Trolls Become A Playable Race? So Many Of Us Are Hopeful
characters for WoW Midnight Curse of UlaTek

I know I'm not alone in hoping that the Amani Trolls become an Allied Race in the near future. When asked if they could give any information on whether this is happening, Kubit responded with, "We hear people love these Amani Trolls so much, and you know, they look awesome. I think both Zul'jarra and Zul'jan have entered deep into folk's hearts." Unfortunately, he later added that they have "nothing specific to announce about them being a playable race at this time."

The Coiled Isle Will Feature A Custom Talent Tree Including Reducing Some Of Your Damage From The Spicy Waters
Talent Tree in WoW Midnight Curse of Ula'Tek

World of Warcraft often offers unique ways to gain temporary buffs or protections. As Kubit says, "there's about 17 different ways that it can be done." In Curse of Ula'tek, players will have a special talent tree unique to the Coiled Isle zone that can offer additional protection against many of the area's dangers. The talent tree gives players and developers a lot of flexibility.

Kubit explained, "I think from a gameplay and functionality standpoint, a talent tree gives you as a player a couple nice little branching decisions of 'what do I care about more?' So you have that currency, or you have the talent points that you can spend, and you want to spend it wisely.

Also, the talent tree and its nodes look like a snake head. We thought that was really cool. Like, when they line up, it actually looks sort of like the head of a cobra or something like that, so it reinforces one of the primary themes of the Curse of Ula'tek, which is snakes exist."

Kubit said there are a bunch of different talents available in this, including ones that help with swimming in poison. He says there are some that will be more valuable within the temple itself or in the vaults, as opposed to outside.

"When you are operating within the Vaults of Zuldazar, you may find creatures who are particularly lucrative and drop more corrosive coins than others. They're always there, but once you get a certain power, you'll be able to see like 'oh, these ones actually have a little something extra for me' due to that beautiful little purple outline that shows on treasure sometimes."

Curse Surges And Cursed Fishing
Cursed Fishing in WoW Midnight Curse of Ula'Tek

With this Curse of Ula'tek update, WoW is introducing a new open world activity called Curse Surges. On the map, it will look like a big glob of green poison and will serve as a shared objective for all players in the zone who want to participate.

Kubit explains, "it's basically like a surge of poison, of dangerous enemies, are in that space. So, you'll have a shared objective like kill a bunch of snakes, loot a bunch of toxin, whatever the thing is. Completing that will remove the veil of a particularly dangerous rare elite creature. Take it down, and you'll get cool rewards. It's a really cool way for folks on the island to find ways every once in a while to gather up and take something down."

I asked what the odds are of attempting to take this on solo if there isn't really anyone around to help. Kubit's answer wasn't promising: "yeah, in most cases, don't try to solo them."

Cursed Fishing Captain Tokka in WoW Midnight Curse of Ula'Tek

After you complete a Cursed Surge, players get to unlock new fishing nodes known as Cursed Fishing. Vought explained that "there's going to be new quests and potentially some secret things associated with the cursed fishing that I can't go into detail about here, but there might be some stuff to discover with it. There's also treasures from Tokka's crew, and a starfish finding minigame kind of thing with the cursed fishing. This can be done by both fishers and non-fishers, so if you still want the spooky vibes, but fishing's not for you, you can still talk to Tokka and his crew."

A New Prey Season Brings New Threats And Rewards With New Voice Lines From Astalor
Astalor in WoW Midnight Curse of UlaTek

The Prey mode that was introduced in WoW earlier this year proved to be a popular feature, and now is back with Season 2. There are new targets to hunt, new spots to hunt on the Coiled Isle, and more. Kubit says, "There will be like traps and snakes that jump out of corpses when you kill enemies and more torments again appearing as you get into Hard difficulty and then Nightmare difficulty as well. There's also the Terror of the Isles. There's this particular target that you can hunt on the Coiled Isle, which adds just a little extra texture to Prey."

Lairs And The World Boss Evolution World Bosses Will Now Be Instanced
World boss in a lair in WoW Midnight Curse of UlaTek

Lairs are a new evolution of the traditional world bosses and are located within special instanced encounters with scaling difficulty. This should address the problems some players face when trying to rush to a world boss battle, only to find it ends as you arrive, and it's also a pretty big draw on server performance, with tons of people attacking in one spot all at once.

Taylor Sanders says that, "Lairs are a one-boss instance, and theyr'e going to come in four different difficulties. The first difficulty is brand new to WoW. We're calling that World difficulty, and if players walk up to the portal, they can click on it or walk into it, and it's going to show what looks very much like a Delve UI. They can select World difficulty, at which point they'll be sent into the dungeon, and they will either fill in behind other players, or have more players automatically filled in next to them.

So we're trying to make these a little bit more accessible so that players don't have to feel like their first step in fighting a big monster is just navigating through a group finder UI. That's not a great start to your adventure."

World difficulty should feel very much like it always has when fighting a world boss. Then, if you want more of a challenge, you can also tackle it under Normal, Heroic, and Flex Mythic difficulties.

The Venomous Abyss Raid Looks Stunning, And Terrifying And Hits Us With Lots Of Lore Right From The Start
Twin Serpents in the Venomous Abyss Raid in WoW Midnight Curse of UlaTek

The new Eight-boss raid coming with Curse of Ula'tek is the Venomous Abyss, where players will face off against Ula'tek herself after she has been unleashed by Zul'jan's actions. It includes some incredible new loot, as well as a stunning new mount for those lucky enough to get it.

Sanders is excited about the encounters in the raid, "one that I find especially fun, or that I'm looking forward to players getting their hands on is Nek'zali the Soulcoiler. That's our first boss encounter. It's dripping with troll aesthetics and lore and visuals and really sort of teases up the entire story of Ula'tek and the Amani Empire's interaction, and Nek'zali's interaction, with that powerful creature. So, for that first boss encounter, we're really excited to hit players right in the face with a lot of lore and story of the patch."

This whole update is heavily focused on the Amani Trolls, and the story of Zul'jan and Zul'jarra. Sanders explains that leading up to Curse of Ula'tek, Zul'jan "sort of ran into a pretty unsavory character from the Amani past" and now this raid is where that all is leading to. "It tells a lot of the story and the relationship between those two characters. It was great for us to develop because there's just so much characterization and troll history attached to that encounter that really brings out the character of those two characters."

If someone didn't run Mythic+ in Season 1 for whatever reason, they don't need to worry.

Andrew De Sousa explains, "Obviously, Delves are always a great source of early gearing and, with August 11th just around the corner here, we'll have Season 2 Mythic dungeons available on Mythic Zero difficulty. So, if you're a new character, you're just catching up, this is an opportunity to spend the week at your leisure, catching up on quests, whatever, and those items will be dropping Season 2 gear immediately, even if the season hasn't started in earnest.

So you'll have a chance to deck yourself out in champion gear from the new raid and have a good foothold going into the next if you want to tackle heroic or anything like that."

The Alter of Fangs Dungeon A Cool Storyline That Leads Directly Into The Venomous Abyss Raid
Altar of Fangs dungeon battle in WoW Midnight Curse of UlaTek

The new three-boss dungeon, Altar of Fangs, is a core storyline dungeon whose narrative leads directly to the Venomous Abyss Raid.

Speaking about this dungeon, De Sousa said, "We took a different sort of angle there with what we were doing with the combat and the creatures. Whereas the Venomous Abyss is this big, grand temple meant to house Ula'tek themselves, this is just a site of power that Zul'jan's discovered.

It's a crumbling, decaying temple that the children of Ula'tek have overrun. This is kind of showing what happens when they've been able to run amok. What does their food chain look like? How do they evolve? How do they mutate? So, there's a lot of looking at it like a deep dive on that culture and how they sort of operate on a day-to-day basis. Very savage, very primal, besital, lots of cool stuff in there."

The Curse of Ula'tek will arrive on August 11, 2026, with Midnight Season 2 beginning on August 18th in World of Warcraft: Midnight.
