MUNA, consisting of Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson and Josette Maskin, has been making its addictively catchy pop music since it formed in 2013. Since then, the group has performed at Lollapalooza three times, most recently on Sunday. 

The band started its set off with “It Gets So Hot,” a song that felt fitting because of the day’s temperature increase. Gavin danced around the stage, as she would for most of the group’s songs, and the set was off to a lively start. 

“Jesus Christ, look at you,” Gavin said, impressed by the crowd’s presence. “We’re a band called MUNA. We’re so happy to be here.” 

Throughout the performance, the band had great chemistry, with members dancing around and interacting with each other in a way that felt like watching three best friends having the time of their lives.

“Thank you so much, babies,” Gavin said during the set. “We’ve f—ing been through it; the rain, the heat, thank you so much for being here for this set. How was ADÉLA?” 

Gavin spoke of her origins from the Chicago suburbs and expressed appreciation for the festival, having attended it herself as a teenager. 

“I want to say I love you so much and it’s gonna be okay,” Gavin said, addressing the teenagers in her audience. 

The band also made sure to make its political stance clear, with Maskin saying “f— Trump and f— ICE.” 

“I said I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and I learned so much about art here, but I also learned so much about segregation and inequality here,” Gavin said, acknowledging the ties between art and politics. “I just wanna take a second to thank our fans for supporting us … keeping politics in our music.”

When introducing the band’s song “I Know a Place,” Gavin called the ability to perform at Lollapalooza the “blessing of our lifetime.” 

The song imagines a safe space for everyone to express themselves freely, one that MUNA undoubtedly creates with its music.
