OpenAI has reduced prices for two GPT-5.6 models by up to 80% and announced its models now serve over one billion active users. On July 30, the price of GPT-5.6 Luna dropped by 80% and GPT-5.6 Terra by 20%.

The following day, OpenAI disclosed the billion-user milestone. Pricing for Sol, the flagship model, remains unchanged. OpenAI also introduced a Fast mode for Sol.

OpenAI attributes the price reductions to efficiency gains across its models and serving systems. However, reaching one billion users has not yet led to profitability.

How OpenAI Cut GPT-5.6 Prices

GPT-5.6 Luna now costs $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens, reduced from $1 and $6, representing an 80% decrease. GPT-5.6 Terra saw a 20% reduction, with prices dropping from $2.50 and $15 to $2 and $12. Sol's pricing remains unchanged.

The reduced Luna and Terra prices mean these models now consume fewer credits under Codex and ChatGPT Work subscriptions. Subscription prices and quota budgets remain the same.

OpenAI introduced Fast mode for Sol, offering up to 2.5 times the standard processing speed at double the price, with no reduction in intelligence according to the company.

OpenAI states that efficiency improvements enabled the price reductions. Through a human-led process, GPT-5.6 Sol autonomously rewrote and optimized production GPU kernels, reducing end-to-end serving costs by 20%. Experiments to improve speculative decoding increased token-generation efficiency by over 15%.

"Better intelligence drives broader adoption. Broader adoption supports more investment. More investment improves intelligence and efficiency," OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar wrote.

OpenAI Reaches One Billion Users, But Profitability Still Lags

Friar announced that OpenAI's models now reach over one billion active users and more than two million businesses. The company did not specify if the user count is weekly or monthly. Based on a previous announcement of over 900 million weekly users, the figure is likely weekly.

OpenAI reports that user engagement increases over time. Six months after signing up, users send about 50% more messages daily and use ChatGPT for twice as many types of work.

Despite user growth, OpenAI has not achieved profitability. In 2025, the company generated $13.07 billion in revenue but lost $21 billion, with only about 50 million of its 900 million weekly users subscribing. Flat-rate AI subscriptions can become unprofitable with heavy usage.

Lower prices may drive broader adoption, but analysts warn this could further pressure margins as OpenAI continues significant spending on computing infrastructure.

What OpenAI’s Price Cuts Mean for API Users

For developers and businesses, these changes have several practical implications:

  1. Reassess model selection based on cost, as GPT-5.6 Luna is now significantly cheaper at $0.20 and $1.20 per million tokens and may be suitable for workloads previously assigned to higher-priced models.
  2. Consider the reduced credit consumption of Luna and Terra in Codex and ChatGPT Work, as the same subscription budget now covers more output from these models.
  3. Evaluate Fast mode for Sol where speed matters, weighing the 2.5x speed increase against the doubled price.
  4. Note that Sol pricing is unchanged, so workloads on the flagship model do not benefit from this cost reduction.

OpenAI has not clarified whether the one billion active users figure is weekly or monthly, nor has it released updated 2026 revenue or loss figures.

It is also unclear how much further efficiency improvements can reduce serving costs, or whether the price cuts will widen or narrow losses as adoption increases. Ongoing margin pressure is expected to be driven by infrastructure spending.
