Mixed Berry Protein Smoothie Recipes

Smoothies have been a mainstay in my diet and routine through various phases of my life. When I was in the middle of a fitness journey, or when I was postpartum and trying to nourish myself and my breastfeeding journey. Smoothies have been handy to have for a quick meal, or meal replacement, or post workout fuel.

The beauty of them is that they can be made with any mix of ingredients, and can suit whatever you have already on hand or ingredients readily accessible to blend into it. I’ve become fond of berry protein smoothies that have added ingredients like ground flaxseed and unsweetened coconut to make them more satisfying. But you can also add in oat, almond butter, peanut butter, chia seeds and more.

Ingredients: Mixed Berry Protein Smoothie Recipe

The ingredients for this mixed berry protein smoothie are below, but I always think it’s fun to switch things up to match your needs, whether it’s just a simple meal replacement or for post-workout recovery.

You can always find ingredients to add more protein or fat to your smoothie, depending on what you are looking to do. And if you want a sweeter smoothie, I have some ideas listed below.

Added Protein
  • Greek Yogurt – Use whatever one suits your needs. I like plain because there is no added sugar.
  • Cottage Cheese – Always an option, but check the salt content
  • Vegan Protein Powder – if you want to avoid whey protein powder
  • Collagen Powder – Just remember this isn’t a complete protein
  • Nut Butters – like peanut butter, or peanut butter powder, almond butter, or others!
Added Fats

It might sound counter intuitive to add fat to your smoothie, but I know that it makes them more satisfying to me to add a little bit in. Do what fits your needs.

  • Coconut Oil, room temperature so it doesn’t create a brick in your smoothie
  • Nut Butters – I love a little almond butter.
  • Avocado – Whole, healthy and totally satisfying and blends beautifully into any smoothie
A Little Sweetness

For me, I just keep mine simple with whatever sweetness the berries provide. But if you need a little extra something here are a couple options!

  • Maple Syrup
  • Agave
  • Honey
  • Natural Sweeteners like Stevia drops
Make Smoothie Packs

When I was nearly postpartum with my boys I had subscribed to a smoothie delivery service, which saved my sanity during a time when I was low on sleep and constantly fluctuating hormones. But it became cost prohibitive. I realized that I could source whole bags of fruit, and the ingredients and create my own smoothie packs that would be just as easy to make, more cost effective, and missing none of the convenience of the pre-packed brethren.

I made my first smoothie packs with these Carrot Cake Smoothie Packs, and I haven’t looked back. Now that I picked 22 pounds of blueberries and froze the majority of them, along with frozen strawberries, and peaches, I can make these mixed berry smoothie packs again quickly.

All of the ingredients, with the exception of my milk of choice, are added to the Ziploc bag and frozen in a bin in the freezer for me to pour into the blender, add milk, and go!

Directions: Mixed Berry Vegan Protein Smoothie Recipe

For making smoothies, I highly recommend a high-speed blender. The higher powered motor will help properly blend up all your frozen ingredients to create a smoother smoothie!

For this, I add all ingredients into the blender, making sure if berries have frozen together, they are broken apart. Then I fill the blender with the milk of my choice, just until it nearly covers the rest of the ingredients.

If your blender has a “smoothie” function, use that, or start small with pulsing the blender to break up the big chunks of fruit, then blend for about 40-45 seconds until smooth.

Add in additional milk if the blender isn’t cutting through the ingredients. Pour into your large cup and serve!
