*NO* 7th Saga "Tin Wyvern" *RESUB*

Original Decision
i'm not calling this a resub as it's drastically different from last time, it's a whole new track - proph

Artist Name: Audiomancer, Aka Eric

This is another attempt at this, although I took a completely different tack this time. I don't think I have done one with quite the style. I pictured a rock band with 5 members...drummer, bass, two different guitars, and someone on rock organ. The guitars and organ take turns on rhythm and lead. Bass and guitars are from FLEX in FL studio...I tried Shreddage, but I couldn't get the sound how I wanted. The guitars are two different guitars from FLEX. The drums and organ are from a soundfont. Bass drum and snare drum are on one channel, toms and cymbals are each on separate channels.

I placed various notes and drum hits "off grid" at times to try to help give the impression of live playing.

When I exported this, I noticed the waveform looks "sausage-like" but I don't think...by my amateur ear...;) it sounds too much like a sausage, besides perhaps perceived volume level. Instead of using busses this time, each instrument got its own sidechain (using peak controller this time) from the bass and snare drum track, and I "automated" low and high shelf frequencies manually for when the different guitars and organ trade rhythm and lead parts. The drums, bass, and master all got a 72db high pass filter at 22 Hertz. This let me push the master level a few db. The sidechain amounts were individually adjusted for each instrument using the wet dry knob in the effects panel for the tracks on the EQ being used for ducking, Fruity Parametric EQ in this case. I noticed much less CPU usage not using routing in this case.

On the drums, I used a limiter -before- peak controller to give a more consistent output for peak controller to respond to. In addition to working with the decay and tension controls, it seemed to smooth out the gain reduction on the instruments, removing jittery output that has been visible to me when watching the EQ before. Also, I think I hear fewer audio artifacts when soling the individual instruments, even without HQ or linear phase modes activated. This is the first time I have tried it this way. Is this the normal way of doing it? Now that I think about it, when folks do normal sidechain, that send happens after the fader I think, peak controller gives a way to do it pre fader. Just thinking "out loud";)

As always, I love hearing feedback from all of the judging staff, and always appreciate and respect the attention given!

Sincerely and Semper Fi,

Eric, also know as Audiomancer.

7th Saga, Mecha Glider.

This is pretty straightforward, the middle section transitions to a minor key with what I think is called subtractive arrangement.

I've only heard this version, not the first submission. Whoa, super stilted (and buried) lead at :09 that's killing this dead I'm afraid; whatever the lead sound is seems like it should be changed to something that doesn't need to sound organic or as humanized. Having it sound like a faux-electric guitar's not going to click.

Not sure why the beats and supporting chugs are so much louder than the leads. The track's also lacking clarity. Already by :52, the core beat's sounding so static and lacking in articulations and variations, like a drum machine preset; the patterns do shift around, but it's from one loop to another, so it always feels devoid of character. The bassline sound works alright for this in some places, though more for the tone than for the timing which is also very locked to grid like much of the supporting writing here.

Some semi-vamping/comping from 1:02-1:52, which shifted to the last sections with a much livelier arranged take on the melody from 1:56-2:11 on the organ before a more rigid-sounding lead from 2:11-2:25 for the close.

Everything's super mechanical-sounding, so, metaphorically, it doesn't lift off of the ground. The leads at :26 and 1:56 have a better tone and sound less like they need as sophisticated timing; everything else isn't helped by its sound choices.

The character and energy that's meant to be conveyed in the writing doesn't come through on account of these samples. Improving all that is unfortunately above my pay grade as a non-musician, but keep showing this off and asking around on how you can upgrade your sound; I don't just mean the samples, I mean how you program, time, and tweak things when they're being input in the first place.

This doesn't feel like it can be spruced up enough, at least in this current state, but I also know that your dedication can't be discounted, so I won't make that mistake. Keep at it, Eric!
