The Metropolitan Police Department has detained a suspect in Wednesday afternoon’s fatal shooting of an innocent bystander near the intersection of Bonanza Road and Lamb Boulevard.

The victim, described as a woman in her 50s, was sitting in the driver’s seat of her vehicle when she was struck by a bullet intended for a man sitting at a bus stop, according Lt. Monique Rodriguez.

Rodriguez said there was no altercation prior to the shooting and the intended victim took off running.

Metro received the initial call at 3:16 p.m. before locating the victim with a gunshot wound.

Rodriguez said officers attempted to render aid, but the victim succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

The homicide investigation is still in its preliminary stages and police have encouraged anyone, including the intended victim, with information to come forward.

Police have not said how many times the victim was struck by gunfire or the location where they found the person of interest, who is currently only identified as a young, adult male.
