Kendal (she/they) and Lake (she/her) knew they didn’t want a traditional wedding. What they wanted was focus… on each other, on the beginning of their life together, and on a place that felt old, moody, and alive. Scotland rose to the top fast. Lake had always been drawn to its history and landscape, and when Kendal suggested eloping there, Lake’s face reportedly lit up: Decision made!

They traveled from Alabama to the Highlands with a very specific vision in mind. Not bright, not airy, not pastel… They were after the darkest, most atmospheric corners they could find. Think ancient forest, low clouds, water moving through stone, and ceremony elements that tied earth, fire, air, and water together. “Dark fairytale” was the brief… more Maleficent than storybook romance.

The day began in a secluded hillside cottage as mist settled over the peaks. The weather had other plans, forcing a last-minute change of location, but instead of dampening the mood, it sharpened it. Perthshire delivered exactly what Kendal and Lake were hoping for: shadowed woods, towering Scots pines, moss underfoot, and that particular Scottish quiet that feels thick rather than empty.

When they stepped out for their first look, it was obvious they were fully committed to the aesthetic. Their outfits mirrored each other without matching, blending gothic drama with textures that felt right at home in the forest. By the time they set off with their celebrant, Lucy Cargill, they already looked like they belonged there.

The ceremony site was deep in the woods, chosen for how untouched it felt. Tall pines, a soft forest floor, and no signs of the modern world pressing in. Their ceremony drew on Celtic traditions centered around the four elements, beginning with the lighting of a flame and cleansing the space with sage. Fire mattered to them, not as spectacle, but as presence… something alive and grounding in the middle of the trees.

Afterward, they wandered through the surrounding woodland, finding pockets of scenery that felt pulled from fantasy. Autumn had settled in, bringing rich color to the landscape, and Scotland showed off a bit. The day ended by a rushing waterfall as the light began to fade.

Then came the part most people wouldn’t attempt. Still in their wedding clothes, Kendal and Lake waded into the river. Cold water, steady current, no hesitation. They sealed their vows by dipping an oathing stone into the flow, binding intention to place, and closed out the evening playing with fire as dusk took over. Intense, elemental, and completely aligned with who they are.

Their relationship story has the same mix of devotion and chaos. They met while working at a physical therapy clinic, where Lake felt an immediate love-at-first-sight connection. Kendal felt it too, though their relationship didn’t officially begin until Kendal moved away, launching them into long-distance life right out of the gate. Their engagement happened during a blizzard in Colorado: Kendal dropped the ring, sprinted onto a frozen lake to retrieve it, and once it was back in hand, Lake dropped to one knee and proposed right back. Mutual, unplanned, and perfectly on brand.

This was not a wedding built for an audience. It was built for two people, a forest, a river, and a flame… and Scotland met them exactly where they were.
