Mesquite police believe floating lantern is to blame for house fires

The Mesquite Fire Department believes a floating lantern caused a major fire that spread and destroyed two homes.
It happened in a neighborhood near Bruton and Peachtree Roads around 8 p.m. Thursday.
Now the department wants to know who released the lanterns.
An investigator told NBC 5 it was a two-alarm fire that took about 30 to 40 minutes to get under control. The fire department said witnesses told them they observed dozens of floating lanterns moving by before the flames started.
The fire department believes at least one of the lanterns, fueled by either oil or some other ignitable material, became entangled in a tree near the homes and started the fires.
We’re told the flames spread quickly, in part, due to yesterday’s winds, and because of conditions and materials on the ground.
The fire department would like to know the origin of the lanterns, and they’re asking anyone with information to call the Mesquite Fire Marshal’s Office at 972-216-6316.
They’d also like to send a reminder to celebrate responsibly with floating lanterns and fireworks.
