Apartment building destroyed in Mesquite Fire, residents displaced

Several families are displaced after a fire destroyed an apartment building in Mesquite on Wednesday.
According to Mesquite Fire Department officials, crews were called to the Westover on 80 apartment complex on the west side of Mesquite along Highway 80 around 12:20 p.m.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames in the attic on the south side of the building. Officials said strong winds caused the fire to spread rapidly through the roof.
As crews battled the blaze, portions of the roof collapsed, forcing firefighters to transition to a defensive firefighting operation.
Despite the extensive damage, everyone inside the building was able to escape safely. No injuries were reported.
The City of Mesquite said the building is a total loss. Fire officials said nine apartment units were damaged or destroyed and 15 residents were displaced.
“Most importantly, we are thankful that no residents or firefighters were injured. We believe this positive outcome was made possible by the quick actions of residents who immediately called for help and the rapid response of our fire department,” said Elizabeth Rodriguez-Ross, councilperson for District 3, which includes the area of the fire. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have been displaced and we remain committed to supporting the affected residents as they recover and will continue working with our community partners to ensure they receive any assistance they may need in the days ahead.”
One of the residents impacted by the fire, Symone Reese, said she was inside her apartment when she first realized something was wrong.
“Yesterday, I was sitting in my apartment and I heard the smoke alarm going off and a few minutes later someone came beating on my door,” Reese said.
She said she quickly grabbed her dog, purse and phone before evacuating. Now, she says, everything she owned is gone.
“That’s the part that’s hard.I just lost my stuff and I just moved here and I don’t have any family in this state so I feel like it makes stuff a little bit harder for me. Because I don’t really have anywhere to go,” Reese said. “But I’m going to be using those resources and just picking up from here.”
Despite the loss, she is grateful no one was seriously hurt.
“I’m feeling overwhelmed, I’m feeling upset and I’m feeling grateful that nobody got hurt and everybody got out,” she said.
City officials and building inspectors have condemned the building, and residents are not allowed to return inside to retrieve belongings because of safety concerns. Officials say much of what remained inside was damaged by fire, smoke or water.
The American Red Cross said it has been working with local emergency management officials to assist those affected. The organization has distributed water and comfort kits and is helping residents address immediate needs, including temporary housing and other emergency assistance.
Reese said the apartment complex is arranging another unit for her, but it could be several days before it is ready. Other displaced residents have told NBC 5 they are staying with relatives or temporarily in hotels.
