SEPTA will close the Market-Frankford Line's 11th Street Station for a year to install new elevators from Market Street and make other station upgrades, officials said Thursday.

Starting Sept. 5, eastbound and westbound trains will bypass 11th Street Station. The underground concourses connecting  11th Street Station to 13th Street Station and Jefferson Station also will be closed to the public.

Riders who normally board or exit at 11th Street Station are advised to use Eighth Street Station or 13th Street Station during the closure.

SEPTA anticipates the 11th Street Station project will be completed by the end of August 2027.

The $44 million project will add street-level elevators on Market Street that provide access to the eastbound and westbound platforms of the Station. The upgrades will make the station fully compliant withe Americans with Disabilities Act.

By condensing the entire project into 12 months of construction, SEPTA expects to save about $3 million and reduce the timeframe for completion by about 10 months. Similar projects to upgrade Market-Frankford Line stations typically take nearly three years to finish, SEPTA said.

The work at 11th Street Station includes new lighting, upgrades to communications systems, a new cashier booth, new floor and wall tiles and new wayfaring signs. The station also will get a new employee restroom, along with structural repairs and waterproofing improvements.

Upgrades have been made at several Market-Frankford Line stations over the past decade. SEPTA finished its overhaul of 15th Street Station in 2019, followed by a history-themed revamp of Fifth Street Station that opened in 2021. Upgrades to 30th Street Station were completed two years ago and work is now underway at 34th Street Station. The stations remained open during all of those projects.

Once the upgrades at 11th Street Station are finished, Spring Garden Station will be the only remaining stop on the Market-Frankford Line that is not ADA accessible.
