Thank you for the Feb. 1 article “Maine’s educators uncertain about impact of Trump orders on school choice, diversity.”

Like many published over the past few weeks, it provides a valuable picture of how Maine’s institutions are struggling to understand how orders from the new presidential administration should be applied in practice. However, it is deeply unfortunate that the article uses the outdated phrase “sexual preference,” a term that has been superseded by “sexual orientation” in both the national discourse and the Associated Press stylebook for many years.

To suggest that sexuality is a choice akin to a preference for chocolate over vanilla does both the LGBTQ+ community and the truth a grave disservice.
