A search for two people who took off after abandoning a U-Haul truck in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, brought out a heavy police presence Monday morning, but after about two hours police said the people hadn’t been caught.
Video from a local business showed the U-Haul speeding down a street while being pursued by state police.
Sturbridge police said they were conducting an active investigation in the area of New Boston and Walker roads and residents should expect “a significant police presence,” including K-9 units, as officers searched for two people who fled on foot after abandoning a U-Haul truck.
They said the investigation began after police received multiple reports of a U-Haul that was operating in an extremely reckless manner, including passing in no passing zones and nearly causing several head-on collisions.
The individuals being sought were described as a male in a white T-shirt and a female wearing a white tank top with a tattoo on her left shoulder.
Police said there was no threat to the public, but residents were being asked to avoid the area while officers conducted their search.
Anyone who sees people matching the descriptions of those being sought by police, do not approach them, according to police. Instead, call Sturbridge police at 508-347-2525 or 911 if the situation is an emergency.
Just after noon, Sturbridge police said that most units involved in the search had left the area, but that state police would keep looking for the people. Police from Spencer, Charlton, Brookfield and East Brookfield all took part in the search.
Officials noted that they’d received 911 calls about the recklessly driving U-Haul.
It wasn’t immediately clear what police think led the rental truck to drive so recklessly.
