View All EventsAbstract: The Kepler Space Observatory was launched in 2009 to find exoplanets in other star systems, and ultimately habitable exoplanets. The Kepler dataset used in this analysis contains 10000 exoplanet candidates, about 3000 of which have been confirmed. As it turns out, most celestial bodies are not exoplanets, so Kepler picks up lots of noise which we would like to sort out.
The goal of clustering on this data is to identify if there are characteristic properties of exoplanets, which can:
Enable automated classification of data, and
Allow for more targeted data collection in the future.
In this talk, we will discuss the results and validity of applying Gaussian Mixture Model clustering on the Kepler exoplanet data, as well as projection, imputation, and other techniques used in the analysis.

Abstract:
The Kepler Space Observatory was launched in 2009 to find exoplanets in other star systems, and ultimately habitable exoplanets. The Kepler dataset used in this analysis contains 10000 exoplanet candidates, about 3000 of which have been confirmed. As it turns out, most celestial bodies are not exoplanets, so Kepler picks up lots of noise which we would like to sort out.

In this talk, we will discuss the results and validity of applying Gaussian Mixture Model clustering on the Kepler exoplanet data, as well as projection, imputation, and other techniques used in the analysis.
