U.S. Highway 287 in Southeast Fort Worth will be closed for at least a week after the driver of a garbage truck died Wednesday afternoon after crashing into a bridge support.
Fort Worth Police say they were called to a crash involving a garbage truck that struck a support pillar of an overpass at southbound U.S. 287 at Erath Street on Wednesday night.
Two men were in the truck at the time of the crash. The driver was ejected from the vehicle, and the passenger was transported to the hospital in critical condition, Fort Worth Police said in a statement.
The driver of the truck died of his injuries, according to FWPD.
The cause of the crash has not been confirmed.
Garbage truck hits overpass on Highway 287 in Fort Worth
The Texas Department of Transportation posted a message on social media advising drivers to seek alternate routes. TxDOT said the main lanes will remain closed for 7 to 10 days while the damage to the overpass caused by the crash is evaluated and repaired.
According to TxDOT, northbound 287 traffic will be detoured to the Wilbarger Street exit, and southbound 287 traffic will be detoured to Berry Street/Vaughn.
Drivers should make alternate travel arrangements. TxDOT said.
On Friday morning, TxDOT announced that all northbound lanes are open at U.S. 287 and Erath St. south of Downtown Fort Worth. The southbound lanes remain closed.
