The future of the next-generation PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix consoles is somewhat uncertain, at least regarding their release, which appears to have been delayed until at least 2028. This delay seems to be caused primarily by the current situation surrounding RAM and storage. In fact, it’s rumored that Sony’s next console will spend $680 on just these two scarce and expensive components.
It was the well-known leaker KeplerL2, who revealed the cost Sony will have to bear for manufacturing the PlayStation 6. A user asked if the final price could be $680, but this seems to have been ruled out after KeplerL2’s response. If the RAM and storage cost $680, then the price of the APU, the main PCB, the power supply, and the rest of the necessary components, along with packaging, distribution, etc., would have to be added to that.
The PS6’s RAM and Storage Would Cost $680
According to leaks, the PlayStation 6 will use GDDR7 memory with a 160-bit bus, capable of supporting up to 40 GB. However, Sony appears to have opted for a 30 GB configuration shared by the CPU and GPU. It’s also rumored that, given the current situation, Sony considered reducing the amount of GDDR7 memory to maintain a more affordable final price for consumers.
If Sony has to face these prices for the PlayStation 6 launch, the final price could likely reach the rumored figures of up to $1,000. Considering that RAM and storage already cover two-thirds of the price, $320 for the remaining components seems reasonable, although this doesn’t change the fact that the final price will still be very high for consumers.
