Brisbane was forecast to remain colder than other Australian capital cities on Monday, with a band of rain sitting over the state’s south-east expected to remain until early next week.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the Queensland capital would get as warm as 20 degrees on Monday, 1 degree colder than Perth, and 3 to 8 degrees colder than the maximum temperatures in Sydney and Melbourne.

Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore said Monday would be 7 degrees cooler than an average October day in Brisbane, which sits about 27 degrees, and said the days would remain between 4 and 2 degrees colder than usual springtime temperatures.

“We stay in this pattern of cool, cloudy conditions thanks to the moist easterly winds combining with the trough through inland Queensland,” he said.

“Together they’re producing widespread areas of clouds, showers, thunderstorms, and rain areas across Queensland, including us here in south-east Queensland this week.”

Narramore said the “traffic jam of weather” leaving the rain band looming over the south-east could last into early next week, bringing up to 150 millimetres of rainfall to Brisbane by the end of Sunday.

While the wet weather spanned the south-east corner, some of the heaviest rainfall hit inner-northern Brisbane, the senior meteorologist said.

The CBD had recorded 28 millimetres of rain since 9am on Sunday, while Eagle Farm recorded 53 millimetres.

Across the river, Lytton recorded 49 millimetres in that period, as did Moreton Bay suburb Albany Creek.

Narramore said Brisbane’s bayside suburbs were likely to continue receiving heavier falls as easterly winds brought moisture off the sea.

Suburbs in the city’s south recorded between 5 and 15 millimetres of rain in the 24-hour stretch from 9am on Sunday, but Narramore said isolated heavy showers were possible across Brisbane and the wider region.

“We could see the chance of flash flooding, particularly over urban areas,” he said.

“Of course, the water can’t soak in over all the concrete and asphalt, so it can lead to floods pretty quickly, as we all know, here in Brisbane.”

The Gold Coast hinterland also recorded some of the heaviest falls in south-east Queensland, with Upper Springbrook recording 60 millimetres of rainfall from 9am on Sunday to the same time on Monday.

Although temperatures would rise across the week, the weather bureau predicted the heaviest rains would hit Brisbane and surrounds later in the week, with thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday.

Narramore said despite the looming rain band, Brisbane residents could expect pockets of clear weather, including easing rain on Monday afternoon and “long fine breaks on Tuesday”.

Brisbane was copped rain last week, following one of the hottest spans of September days in the city since the turn of the century.

The city recorded 1.4 millimetres of rainfall last month, with weather bureau data already indicating more than 40 millimetres in October.
