Troy Jackson got $15k from big oil, pharma lobbyists. He’s giving it to charity.

In doing so, the Democrat says he's keeping the so-called 'Dirigo Pledge' he made while running in the abbreviated Senate primary last summer.

Troy Jackson is donating about $15,000 in political contributions from oil and pharmaceutical lobbyists, his campaign said on Thursday.

Jackson, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, said in a news release that he will donate $5,000 each to Keep ME Warm/Project Heat and the Good Shepherd Food Bank, and $2,500 each to Maine Needs and the Augusta Food Bank.

The lobbyists’ donations are a small fraction of the $20.4 million his campaign says it raised since Jackson secured the nomination on July 25. In giving the donations to charity, Jackson said he’s keeping the”Dirigo Pledge” he made during the abbreviated Democratic primary to replace Graham Platner in July.

“I said I wouldn’t take money from Big Oil or Big Pharma lobbyists, and I meant it,” Jackson said in a written statement. “That money is better spent helping Mainers heat their homes, put food on the table, afford the things they need, and get through a tough winter.”

Jackson also pledged, among other things, to refuse donations from corporate PACs and the pro-Israel AIPAC; to fully disclose his campaign finances; to advocate for a constitutional amendment to get big money out of politics; and to advocate for a ban on congressional stock trading.

The announcement came hours before his fourth and final debate with Republican Sen. Susan Collins, 73, who has called out the 58-year-old former logger for accepting corporate contributions as state Senate president.

And it comes as polls show that inflation and high gas prices are among the top issues on voters’ minds.

The deadline for campaign finance reports to be filed is midnight Thursday. Jackson has yet to release his full campaign finance report, despite saying in a televised debate that he would release it on Wednesday morning.

Collins, meanwhile, released hers Thursday afternoon, reporting a total of $3.9 million from July 1 through Sept. 30. Her total for the campaign is now nearly $17.7 million. She reported $5.4 million in cash for the final stretch of the campaign.

Despite Jackson’s fundraising, Republicans have a clear money advantage in Maine’s closely watched race.

So far, Republican-aligned groups have spent or reserved $151.5 million on ads, compared to $110.7 million by Democrat-aligned groups, according to the media tracking firm AdImpact.
