U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ office in Portland received a letter containing an “unknown substance” on Friday as the FBI investigates a slew of such incidents reported across the country.

A spokesperson for the Republican confirmed in an email that the letter at the Portland office was intercepted and no injuries were reported. She also said Collins’ Washington, D.C., office received such a letter Thursday.

“Thank you to the Portland police, the Portland fire department, the hazmat team, and the FBI (for) their quick and courageous response,” Katie Brown, Collins’ chief of staff, said in a written statement.

Last month, Collins’ Biddeford office was vandalized by someone who spray-painted a vulgar message on the office’s outer doors.

The FBI has been investigating “a series of suspicious mailings” across the country, including to secretary of state and election offices.

“Some of the letters contained an unknown substance and we are working closely with our law enforcement partners to respond to each incident,” the FBI said in a written statement.

A spokesperson for the FBI’s Boston field office said the agency is “not confirming specific instances of letters” when asked about the incident in Portland on Friday.

A spokesperson for the Portland Fire Department did not immediately respond to a request for information on the department’s involvement in the response at Collins’ office. A Portland police spokesperson deferred inquiries on the incident to the FBI.

Collins is currently seeking her sixth term in the U.S. Senate, facing Democrat Troy Jackson.
