BRUSSELS, October 21. /TASS/. The European Commission and the European External Action Service want to include new restrictions on Russian oil in the 22nd package of sanctions against Russia, despite Europe’s energy crisis. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said this while addressing a European Parliament session in Strasbourg, which was broadcast by the parliament’s press service.

She claimed that she had proposed that the 22nd package include "new listings focused on curbing Russia’s sources of revenue further: from the shadow fleet [the term used in the European Union for foreign tankers transporting Russian oil and petroleum products despite EU sanctions - TASS], from the energy sector and from the banking sector." She emphasized that the EU also intends "to target sectors and entities <…>, also in 3rd countries."

Kallas did not specify when Brussels expects to adopt the package, which requires unanimous approval of the measures by EU member states.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that since the beginning of the year, EU countries had spent €100 billion more on energy imports than during the same period in previous years. Gas prices in Europe had risen by 140%, while diesel prices had increased by 100%.

After the 21st sanctions package was adopted in June this year, the European Commission announced plans to introduce the 22nd package of sanctions against Russia in September, but this did not happen. On October 12, the EU approved a blacklist of 1,600 companies and individuals allegedly linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex. The European Commission subsequently clarified that this was not the 22nd package, which remains under development.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Western sanctions against Russia were breaking records in terms of both their number and their ineffectiveness, as well as the amount of damage they caused to those imposing the restrictions.
