Novotny’s three goals and two assists in a 6-0 Peterborough Petes romp over the Barrie Colts pushed him to 16 points through 10 games and had the Czech winger fourth in the league as of Sunday morning. Saginaw Spirit forward Dima Zhilkin leads the way with 21 points.

“It all came from great teamwork,” Novotny told the Peterborough Examiner following the scoring outburst against Barrie. “We played a great game as a team tonight and when the team plays like this it helps me a lot.”

It was the second win in a row and third in four starts for Peterborough (5-7-0-0), who look like a contender on paper but are off to a modest start. They finished 40-24-1-3 last season and got 34 goals and 65 points out of Novotny along the way. He was a first-round pick (No. 24 overall) by the Canucks at the NHL draft in Buffalo this past June.

“I always believed in this group that we could get back on track,” Novotny, 18, explained. “Obviously, we still have a lot to prove. We just need to stay positive. Every team has times like that, and I’m happy it came at the start and not at the end of the season. We can get better and better and learn from that.”

All three of Novotny’s goals came on the power play and were part of a 5-of-6 night with the man-advantage for Peterborough. The Petes power play was fourth in the OHL to start play Sunday, clicking at 30.9 per cent (17-of-55).

Novotny tipped home a Cooper Dennis shot at 1:07 of the second period to make it 2-0. He ripped a shot past Barrie goalie Hagan Bach from the right faceoff circle on a 4-on-3 at 16:55 of the second to up the score to 5-0, and then jammed home at rebound from in tight at 12:50 of the third to finish the scoring.

Peterborough resumes action Thursday, playing host to Canucks prospect Brooks Rogowski and his Oshawa Generals teammates. Oshawa (4-5-2-0) then is home to Peterborough on Friday. The Generals were set to face the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday. Rogowski has yet to score a goal this season but has seven assists through nine games. Rogowski, 18, was a second-round pick (No. 33 overall) by Vancouver in June.
