Die achte Sonate ist eine der drei Kriegssonaten. Nach der turbulenten Siebten Sonate gilt die Achte oft als die introspektivste und lyrischste der drei Kriegssonaten, in der es neben tiefer Melancholie aber auch Momente explosiver Kraft gibt. Beides kommt in der Interpretation von Irma Gigani spannungsvoll zum Ausdruck.

Georgian pianist Irma Gigani has recorded three Prokofiev sonatas on a Bösendorfer grand piano. She begins by playing the Second Sonata. The clarity of the structure and the conciseness of the rhythm, alongside the drama and expressiveness, are the main characteristics of this interpretation.

The uniquely unsettling rhythm of the first movement of the Fourth Sonata does not overshadow the lyrical moments. The pianist initially imbues the second movement with a dark and menacing tone before heightening the tension with tonal contrasts. In the final movement, Gigani skillfully combines analytical insight with inner fire.

The Eighth Sonata is one of the three War Sonatas. Following the turbulent Seventh Sonata, the Eighth is often considered the most introspective and lyrical of the three War Sonatas, featuring not only deep melancholy but also moments of explosive power. Both aspects are expressed with great tension in Irma Gigani’s interpretation.
