Trying to make sense of another Eagles 4th-quarter defensive collapse

Дата публикации: 19-10-2026 07:00:00

This is one hell of an Eagles defense. For three quarters. Then it isn’t anymore.
The Eagles’ defense is allowing just 13.2 points per game going into the fourth quarter. That’s dominating football. Keep up that pace for one more quarter and you’re giving up 17 ½ points per game. Good enough to win most NFL games.
The problem is that NFL football games these days are four quarters long. And that fourth quarter is a problem for the Eagles. A big one.
The Eagles fell apart again in the fourth quarter Sunday in their 25-14 loss to the Panthers, and they’ve now allowed 58 points in the fourth quarter this year, which is 42 percent of the total points they’ve allowed.
In losses to the Rams, Jaguars and Panthers over the past three weeks, they’ve actually allowed more points in the fourth quarter (38) than in the first three quarters combined (30).
The Bears game was a blowout, but the defense allowed two long touchdown drives in the fourth quarter of the Rams game, blowing a late 10-point lead. The Eagles led the Jaguars 14-10 in the fourth quarter before allowing that late Trevor Lawrence touchdown. And on Sunday they gave up two long 4th-quarter touchdown drives, including a 14-play, 92-yard drive. The Panthers also drove down to the Eagles’ 2-yard-line in the final seconds but didn’t try to score.
“I feel like we were playing well, first half for most games,” Cooper DeJean said. “Second half, we kind of just take our foot off the pedal a little bit, which we can’t do. We’ve got to find a way to put our offense in better situations.
“Staying together is the most important thing. Continue to work on our details. You know, I feel like our details slipped in that second half a little bit.”
Overall this year, the Eagles have outscored their six opponents 76-56 before halftime, only to be outscored 81-30 in the second half.
Now, these number don’t exist in a vacuum. This defense has had to play a ton of snaps and a ton of minutes because the offense has been so bad. When the offense can’t get off the field, especially late in games, it makes the defense’s job much more difficult.
During the four-game losing streak, the offense has averaged just 25:19 of possession, meaning the defense has had to play on the average 34:41 per game. It’s the Eagles’ worst time of possession in a four-game span since – not surprisingly – 2015, Chip Kelly’s final season.
No excuse, Zack Baun said.
“If you’re out there, you gotta do your job and execute it at a high level,” he said. “Our standard is our standard, I’ve been preaching that. And it doesn’t matter who’s out there, what injuries we have. If you’re tired, if you played a lot of snaps, if you didn’t play a lot of snaps, you gotta execute.”
Fifteen of the 32-longest plays the Eagles have allowed this year – nearly half – have come in the fourth quarter.
Through three quarters, the Eagles are limiting opposing offenses to 4.2 yards per play. Fourth quarter that number jumps to 5.1.
Why does it keep happening?
“I really don’t know,” Jordan Davis said. “Going out there in the first half it’s easy to keep the momentum going. Later in the game, for a myriad of reasons, it’s just a lot of stuff going on. We have to finish, we have to figure out a way to, at this point, get takeaways, score.”
The Eagles don’t have a 4th-quarter takeaway – they only have three in the first three quarters. They only have two 4th-quarter sacks in six games – they only have 8.0 total.
The defense was only on the field for 14:01 and 30 plays in the first half, which means they had to play 20:47 and 44 snaps in the second half.
The Eagles have been outscored by 51 points in the second half so far, the 2nd-biggest 2nd-half scoring margin through six games in franchise history. In 1971 they were outscored by 79 points. They were also outscored by 51 points in 1933, their first year of existence.
“Obviously, we have to keep drives going, so early in the second half before it got into two minute and before it got into some of the no-huddle drives, not getting sustained drives there obviously cost us and puts the defense in a tough spot,” Nick Sirianni said.
“We have to do a better job staying on the field there early on, but I think some of the situations of the game called for that a little bit as well.”
