The YEP’s take and off-camera moments from Sunday’s Roses derby against Manchester United at Elland Road.

A long-awaited Leeds United home win against arch rivals Manchester United will have to wait for another year after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Elland Road. Here’s the YEP’s take on who had good days, bad days and some off-camera moments from the 1-1 stalemate.

Good day

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

He could have done with a bit more support but Whites no 9 Calvert-Lewin put in another excellent shift leading the line and the striker took this season’s tally to four goals already from just seven games with his sharp turn and finish after Tarik Muharemovic’s knock down to an Anton Stach corner. It’s early days but Calvert-Lewin’s strike saw him climb to joint-third in the division’s top scorer charts - one behind both Alexander Isak and Joao Pedro who are already three adrift of Erling Haaland. The Man City star will most likely finish streets ahead of his rivals but Calvert-Lewin has looked in fine fettle for some time now and should at the very least be firmly in the conversation when it comes to those leading the chasing pack.

Sean Longstaff

Whites boss Daniel Farke went with an unchanged side for a fifth game in a row which meant another seat on the bench for Whites midfielder Longstaff who went into the day having bagged just eight Premier League minutes so far this season in two late outings from the bench. Longstaff, though, was called for as Farke’s second change with nine minutes left after Lukas Nmecha had replaced Noah Okafor, marking a welcome return for Longstaff who quickly put himself about and made some decent tackles and blocks.

Bad day

Noah Okafor and Anton Stach

Okafor’s brilliant brace gave Leeds a first win at Manchester United since 1981 in last season’s Roses derby at Old Trafford six months earlier and the Swiss attacker was naturally selected as the cover star for Sunday’s matchday programme. Okafor again lined up alongside Calvert-Lewin in attack but the star man from April’s win at Old Trafford experienced a very frustrating afternoon where nothing really came off, Okafor eventually substituted for Lukas Nmecha as the first change in the 74th minute. He was far from alone in experiencing attacking frustration which was ultimately the difference between one point or three and Stach had a similar sort of game.

Off-camera moments

An amazing amount of expectation that Leeds would get a victory, the Whites made favourites by the bookies and just about everyone you asked going for a home win. Some didn’t even think the Red Devils would score.

Gabi Gudmundsson strolling out as the first Leeds player to check out the pitch, having a walk around by himself before joining the others and looking very much in the zone. He had another decent enough game but it was United’s other wing back Jayden Bogle who impressed the most.

Boos - lots of them - for anything Man United orientated and even for the young away mascot when asked who is favourite player was and answering Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes received predictable stick during the game itself and produced another no show on the goals or assists front. But it was Karl Darlow who received the loudest Elland Road ‘welcome’ - the former Whites keeper’s name greeted with huge boos when read out as the teams were announced and again when he took his place on the bench.
