In the 54th episode of Health Wrap by The Hindu, Ramya Kannan, Health Editor, and Zubeda Hamid, Senior Assistant Editor, discuss the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, experimental approaches to studying human brain development, and incidents from Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya that highlight barriers to healthcare access.

The episode begins with the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, awarded jointly to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. The discussion explains how optogenetics uses light-sensitive proteins to control the electrical activity of selected nerve cells. By activating or inhibiting specific neurons, researchers can investigate how neural circuits influence movement, memory, emotions and behaviour. The technique has become an important tool in neuroscience research, including studies of neurological and psychiatric disorders. However, it remains largely a research tool and is not a routine treatment for brain disorders.

The next segment examines an experimental approach described as ‘xenocortication’, in which human brain tissue is transplanted into the brains of mice. Researchers have been exploring this approach to study aspects of human brain development that are difficult to reproduce in laboratory-grown cells or animal models alone. The discussion looks at how the transplanted tissue may receive a blood supply, develop connections and interact with its surroundings within a living brain. The approach could help researchers investigate human neuronal development and mechanisms involved in neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders. However, it remains experimental, and findings from such models cannot be assumed to reflect human brain development fully. The work also raises ethical questions about the use of human neural tissue in animal research.

The episode then turns to barriers to healthcare access, examining how social discrimination and inadequate infrastructure can prevent people from receiving medical care. In Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit woman was allegedly denied admission to a government hospital while in labour and was forced to deliver outside the facility. Her family alleged that untouchability was involved. The incident highlights how discrimination can obstruct access to care even when a health facility is physically available.

Another incident in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district, an ill child died in his mother’s arms while his parents were making a three-hour trek to reach the nearest hospital. According to the village headman, the family had tried to arrange a vehicle after the child’s condition deteriorated, but no driver was willing to travel to the village because of the poor road conditions. The incident draws attention to the difficulties faced by people in remote areas, where distance, road connectivity and the availability of transport can delay access to emergency medical care.

The episode ends with a fun-fact segment on why mice are widely used in laboratory experiments. The episode can also be viewed on The Hindu health page along with the full playlist of The Health Wrap
