When to book and when to fly are separate decisions. Holiday booking windows open earlier than those for standard trips. For families, the aim is to secure every seat without exceeding the total group budget.

Use these ranges as guideposts. Once your dates are fixed, waiting usually adds risk rather than savings.

With your budget set, use early October to check routes and find cheap flights for your trip. Confirm the total cost for your group. If a fare fits your budget and works for everyone, book it instead of holding out for a lower price.

Skip the myths about booking on a certain weekday or at a certain hour. Prices change constantly. After booking, check your ticket’s change rules: some fares let you rebook at a lower price and receive a credit, but basic economy usually limits changes.

Before booking, compare nearby departure and return dates, including late-January returns. A small timing change may help you avoid peak prices – but only if the savings outweigh extra hotel nights or additional days away.

If those dates still cost too much, look next at cheaper cities and airports.

Once your dates are set, focus on where to go.

Start by checking Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Antonio, Tampa, and Fort Lauderdale. These high-volume airports give you more flight options, but fares still depend on your departure airport, dates, and available seats. Compare Fort Lauderdale (FLL) with Miami (MIA) if either works for your trip.

Add San Juan, Puerto Rico, to your domestic search; U.S. travelers don’t need a passport. For Florida trips, check lodging prices before choosing a flight. Holiday demand can wipe out airfare savings once you add your stay.

If U.S. fares are still high, check nearby international gateways.

Compare Mexico City, Guadalajara, Guatemala City, Bogotá, Montréal, and Toronto with resort destinations such as Cancún. Check passport rules early and confirm six months of validity for every traveler. Choose these options only if the full trip costs less than flying from your home airport.

Montréal and Toronto also come with a risk of winter delays. And a lower fare from a major U.S. gateway may require a separate positioning flight to reach it. Add that flight’s fare and baggage fees before booking.

Rank destinations by total trip cost – not airfare alone. Lower lodging costs can make up for a higher flight price. Once you have a short list, compare current quotes line by line using the table below. Keep the group size and number of nights the same.

For nearby airports, count transportation costs at both ends. A lower fare into FLL instead of MIA – or Sanford (SFB) instead of Orlando (MCO) – only works if ground transport does not erase the savings.
