Google has announced the Fitbit Edge, a $179.99 fitness tracker with a 1.34-inch display, built-in GPS, and a user-replaceable battery, a first for any Fitbit. Preorders opened on Monday, and the tracker goes on sale on October 27. The Edge works with both Android phones and iPhones through the Google Health app.

The Edge is the first display-equipped Fitbit tracker since the Charge 6 arrived in 2023. Google places it between the screenless Fitbit Air, which costs $99.99, and the Pixel Watch 5, which starts at $349.99. The new tracker is $20 more expensive than the Charge 6's regular price.

The capsule-shaped Edge replaces the Charge 6's 1.04-inch screen with a larger 1.34-inch panel and swaps the haptic nub for a physical side button. According to Google, the tracker includes:

• its own GPS chipset, which Google says tracks more accurately than the Charge 6
• an altimeter that records elevation gain and loss and counts floors climbed
• a far-field skin temperature sensor carried over from the Pixel Watch
• electrical sensors that work with the ECG app
• music controls for any audio playing on the connected phone

Battery life is rated at seven days, or about two days with the always-on display enabled. A full charge takes around 90 minutes, half an hour less than the Charge 6, and the Edge uses the same charger as the Fitbit Air. Repair options for the replaceable battery will vary by region.

Google also says Gemini-powered automatic activity tracking can identify up to 100 workout types, and the Edge offers more than 50 exercise modes, up from 40 on its predecessor. The same detection upgrades are coming to the Pixel Watch 5 and the Fitbit Air.

A Google Health Premium subscription adds blood pressure trend tracking without manual calibration and insulin resistance trends without a blood draw. Google representatives also said a phone can now be paired with a Fitbit Air and a Fitbit Edge at the same time, so owners can switch between the two. Pairing two Fitbits at once was not possible before.

The Edge has no NFC hardware, which means no contactless payments through Google Wallet. Charge 6 owners who pay from the wrist should factor that in before preordering, because tap-to-pay is one feature the older tracker had and the new one drops.

Music control moves in the other direction: the Charge 6 only worked with YouTube Music, which required a subscription, while the Edge controls any playback on the phone.

Bands ship in Active, Active Sport, Performance Loop, Magnet, and Metal Links styles, and a Stephen Curry edition costs $220. Google Maps turn-by-turn directions are not available at launch and are scheduled to reach the Edge later this year.
