Welcome back to the Daily Briefing. This is Ezgi Akin, filling in for Gabrielle. In today’s edition:Israel marks three years since Oct. 7 amid accountability debateHouthis strike Yemen airport, claim new attacks on Saudi ArabiaHow language barriers are bringing Syria’s Kurds and Arabs closerSatellite images show renewed activity at suspected Iranian nuclear siteThanks for reading,Ezgi (ezgi_akin)Why Netanyahu still resists an independent probe 3 years after Oct. 7Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lays a wreath during the state memorial ceremony for the third anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack, at Mount Herzl military cemetery, Jerusalem, Oct. 5, 2026. — DEBBIE HILL / POOL / AFP via Getty ImagesAs Israel marks the third anniversary of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, Israelis continue to call on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to launch an independent investigation into the failures that enabled the attack and to take full personal responsibility. The horrors of Oct. 7, when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 hostages and bringing them to the Gaza Strip, still loom large over Israeli society.Netanyahu, in turn, has rejected calls for a commission of inquiry whose members are appointed by the president of the Supreme Court and has instead backed a politically appointed panel.Meanwhile, recent reports that Arab officials warned Netanyahu before the Hamas attack have increased pressure on him. The Israeli prime minister has increasingly sought to shift responsibility toward the security establishment. Last month, he accused senior defense officials of deliberately failing to wake him in the hours before Hamas launched its attack, arguing that, had they alerted him, he would have ordered the military to mobilize.Rina Bassist looks at the debate and its potential impact on the upcoming Israeli general election on Oct. 27.Listen to a breakdown of the top headlines on today’s episode of the Middle East Minute podcast with Adam Lucente.Houthis strike Yemen airport, claim attacks on Saudi ArabiaHouthi supporters gather in solidarity with the movement as fighting escalates across several fronts, in Sanaa. — Mohammed al-Mahdi/ReutersAs a major Saudi-backed offensive against the Houthis enters its third day, Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have continued amid intensifying clashes between the Iran-backed group and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces.Clashes over the past few days have been concentrated in Yemen's southwestern Taiz province, which sits near routes linking government-held southern Yemen with the Red Sea coast and the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait.Yemen's Transport Ministry said Wednesday that the Iran-backed group also attacked Aden International Airport in southern Yemen. The Houthis also claimed to have attacked several targets in Saudi Arabia, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Abha International Airport and an air base in Khamis Mushait. Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm attacks on the Riyadh or Abha airports, but the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted ballistic missiles north of Riyadh and missiles targeting Khamis Mushait.Syria's Kurds, Arabs find common cause in battle for language rightsYouths play the daf, an Iranian frame drum, during a protest demanding the right to education in the Kurdish language in Al-Qamishli, Syria, on Sept. 22, 2026. — Amjad Kurdo / Middle East Images / AFP via Getty ImagesAs students in Kurdish-majority areas across northeastern Syria protest restrictions on education in their mother tongue, their struggle is finding unexpected sympathy among Arab refugees returning home. Arab families who fled the civil war to Turkey and have now returned to Syria had faced similar language barriers there, while some of their children now struggle to receive an education in Arabic. Israeli officials have previously said the site was linked to nuclear weapons development. The site was struck by Israel in March. The imagery suggests activity resumed between September and October. Speaking to Reuters late Tuesday, US Vice President JD Vance questioned Iran’s commitment to curbing its nuclear program, saying Washington had not “seen a long-term commitment to do that.”
