What will Netflix‘s next big animated hit be after the massive success of “KPop Demon Hunters“? As 2026 draws to a close, it looks like it’ll be a three-way showdown between Brad Bird‘s “Ray Gunn,” festival favorite “In Waves,” and “Steps,” a new take on the Cinderella story.
Amy Poehler produces a revisionist fairy-tale comedy that offers an intriguing new perspective on a familiar tale: what if Cinderella’s “evil” stepsisters aren’t so bad after all? Ali Wong, Stephanie Hsu, Nikki Glaser, and Amanda Seyfried lead the voice cast, with Bette Midler also on board as the Fairy Godmother.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Steps,” courtesy of Netflix:
Think you know Cinderella’s “evil” stepsisters? Think again. Tired of living in Cinderella’s shadow, Lilith (Ali Wong) steals the Fairy Godmother (Bette Midler)’s magic wand and hijacks the Royal Ball with her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu), breaking the Cinderella story as we know it and dooming the kingdom to the tyrannical rule of Priscilla (Nikki Glaser), a villainous schemer who swoops in and snatches the throne. Now, Lilith must team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) to fight biker trolls, outrun evil henchmen, and escape the Screaming Woods on an epic quest to save the kingdom, but most importantly, their relationship.
Along with Wong, Hsu, Glaser, Seyfried, and Midler, the voice cast of “Steps” also includes Daniel Radcliffe Young Mazino, Peter Dinklage, and Damian Priest.
Alyce Tzue & John Ripa co-direct a screenplay by Ava Tramer, James Madejski, Jen Chuck, Dana Schwartz, and Felicia Ho for the film, based on a story by Tramer, Madejski, Schwartz, Ho, Riki Lindhome, and Kate Micucci. Producers on “Steps” include Amy Poehler and Kim Lessing via Paper Kite Productions, and Jane Hartwell.
“Steps” premieres on Netflix on November 20. Also, watch out for “Steps (Soundtrack From The Netflix Film),” the original soundtrack for the feature film, featuring a new song by BLACKPINK‘s JENNIE, four original songs by Justin Tranter, and the movie’s original score by Kris Bowers. The soundtrack releases the same day as the film.
