Burger King Japan has confirmed a major data breach exposing over 11 million user records following a hack of the fast food chain's smartphone app.

The incident, affecting approximately 11.18 million app member records, occurred when nefarious actors breached the company's database management server. According to internal investigation information released by BK Japan, the unauthorized access took place over a window between October 2 and October 7. Company officials discovered the breach on October 13 and immediately blocked the attack, and are bringing in external cybersecurity experts to assist with the forensic review.

The exposed dataset includes a wide range of PII, including member IDs, email addresses, registration types, prefectures, genders, dates of birth, full names written in kanji and kana, and telephone numbers. Additionally, the leaked records contain data points showing email verification status and whether members utilized the app's mobile ordering features.

Thankfully, the scope of the leaked info is limited regarding financial information and authentication credentials. BK Japan clarified that the compromised system does not store credit card numbers. Furthermore, the company noted that no leak of login passwords has been confirmed at this stage of the investigation, and no secondary harm or fraudulent utilization of the stolen records has been reported so far.

Nonetheless, despite the absence of exposed passwords or credit card data, stolen personal information still poses its fair share of risks. Names, dates of birth, email addresses, and phone numbers can be sold to and weaponized by malicious actors in phishing campaigns, targeted scams, or social engineering attacks against affected users.

In response to the breach, management has issued formal apologies to its customer base and urged app users to remain vigilant against suspicious incoming emails, text messages, and phone calls. "We sincerely apologize for the great inconvenience and concern this situation has caused to our customers and all others involved," reaps from the fast-food chain stated. As investigations proceed, BK Japan says that it is implementing additional infrastructure safeguards to prevent further unauthorized exposures.

The attack on BK Japan is just part of a long string of cybersecurity breaches (many of which were AI-assisted) facing major commercial businesses and regional operators across Japan this year, with Sakura Internet, Nikkei, and IDC Frontier listed among the victims.
