The Brussels-based gallery Super Dakota announced that it will close at the end of October. The gallery’s last show will be Adrian Geller’s current solo, which closes on October 16.

In an email to its listserv, founder Damîen Dakota (Damîen Bertelle-Rogier) wrote, “This has been a great journey, but after 15 years the model of a commercial art gallery doesn’t match my ambitions anymore. I want to continue supporting artists through other platforms and models.”

At the time of its closing, the gallery represented 16 artists including Geller, !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Alex Clarke, John Divola, Chris Dorland, Tabor Robak, LaRissa Rogers, and Julia Wachtel, who featured in the 2026 edition of Greater New York and is included in the inaugural Aldrich Decennial.

Dakota, who has also advised collectors on building their holdings for the past decade, said that instead of operating as a gallery, Super Dakota will “continue as a space for curatorial research, working closely with artists, collectors and institutions to build collections and projects focused on historical relevance and theoretical aesthetics.”

Additionally, he will soon launch MeatSpace Institute of Arts, which he described as “an institution at the intersection of art and gaming, designed to make culture radically accessible to anyone, anywhere and to rethink the role of museums and art institutions in the future.”

Super Dakota opened in September 2013 with the aim of presenting “cutting-edge and engaging shows, toward the perspective of an exacting contemporary art finding its roots in the history of art,” according to a description provided to Independent, the New York art fair. The gallery would go on to show in a number of international art fairs, including Independent, NADA Miami, Liste Basel, Frieze London, and Art Basel Miami Beach.

Its first exhibition, “Void,” featured the work of 10 artists, including Joachim Bandau, Baptiste Caccia, and Jan Groover. The gallery’s third show would be dedicated to a solo for Groover, who had died in 2012 and had been an important photographer since the ’70s. Exhibitions for Bandau and Caccia would follow in the first year and a half.

Juxtaposing established artists with emerging ones on the gallery’s roster would come to define Super Dakota’s programming for the rest of its history. Some memorable group shows in that vein include “Masha” (2016), which had John Cage, Yvonne Rainer, Lawrence Weiner, and Groover alongside Lydia Gifford, GL Rogier, Ariane Schick, and Josh Tonsfeldt, and “The Scales of Persona and Possibility” (2018), featuring Fischli & Weiss, Douglas Gordon, Wade Guyton, Adam Pendleton, Raymond Pettibon, and Robert Rauschenberg in dialogue with Schick, Alex Clarke, Sarah Derat, Louis Malle, and Mitchell Syrop.

The past year and a half has seen numerous galleries close entirely or wind down their operations in other cities both in the US and Europe. Earlier this week, Zurich-based Eva Presenhuber announced she would close her outpost in Vienna, while Viennese dealer Emmauel Layr decided to scale back his business last month. In June, fellow Brussels gallery Dépendance said it would shutter operations after 23 years.

In his email, Dakota thanked the community that had supported the gallery over the past decade and a half, including his mother and his partner. He added, “I also want to express my gratitude to the collectors who have been with us all these years supporting our vision and the practices of our artists, and of course I want to thank [all the] artists who have shown their works in our gallery. To all, I’m forever grateful.”
