If you recently picked up one of the shiny new Googlebooks, you probably spent your first day trying to set it up like a normal computer. And if you are like most people who juggle work and personal lives, you probably looked for the profile switcher in Chrome right away.
If you ended up scratching your head trying to figure out where it was, you’re not looking in the wrong place. The feature itself is non-existent on Googlebooks.
Chrome on Googlebook OS treats you like you only have one single digital identity, which is a massive headache if you need to keep your personal bookmarks and your work spreadsheets in completely separate spaces.
Although Google brought a full desktop version of Chrome to Arm64 Linux machines not long ago, this new laptop platform launched with a surprisingly stripped-down browser experience.
The good news is that Google knows people are annoyed, and a fix is already in the pipeline.
In response to a frustrated Reddit user who pointed out the lack of multi-profile support and account switching, Google employee Mishaal Rahman confirmed that it’s coming.
He wrote that the team is working on updates to Chrome on Googlebook OS, adding that “while Chrome on Googlebook OS does not currently support multiple profiles, this will come in a future update.”
That said, he didn’t share an ETA for the update. So it might arrive with the next update or at a later date.
Still, it’s quite bizarre that a basic feature that has been around for several years now was missing right out of the box on Googlebooks. After all, the OS literally has Google’s name attached to it. Heck, even third-party browsers like Microsoft Edge have embraced Google account profiles to make juggling accounts easier. Yet Google’s newest flagship operating system somehow launched without it.
Plus, if you’ve been reading or watching Googlebook reviews, like the one from Android Authority, you’ll know that there are several other issues with these laptops. Early adopters have been dealing with rough edges around phone syncing too, though Google Play services updates are already rolling out to smooth out setup hiccups on Android phones.

PiunikaWeb’s Take
Shipping a laptop in 2026 without multi-profile browser support is a glaring blind spot. Google is positioning Googlebook OS as a genuine laptop replacement for everyday users and professionals, but modern computing is entirely built around separating your work and personal life.
What makes this omission especially telling is how Googlebook OS is put together under the hood. Because the operating system is heavily based on Android rather than traditional ChromeOS, the browser initially seems to share more DNA with Chrome for Android than the full desktop client. Mobile Chrome has notoriously dragged its feet on proper multi-profile switching, and that architectural shortcut is clearly biting users right now.
Until the update reaches your device, the simplest workaround is to use another browser, like Firefox or Brave, for your secondary accounts. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than constantly clearing your cookies.
