Could possibly be the result of a broadcaster re-using a series identifier by mistake. I've had this happen with older episodes of some shows. You get to the end of the current series then an older series starts being recorded. My theory is that the broadcaster is trying to trick you into watching more stuff. ITV used to be infamous for doing this with Midsomer Murders. You'd record the latest episode then the next day your box is stuffed to the brim with previous episodes. Or a broadcaster just makes a mistake. I don't know how the series ID works but perhaps they accidentally pick one that matches another series. Bottom line: Broadcasters make mistakes with series link. Sometimes the link is just broken. Sometimes something wrong (for a given value of 'wrong') gets linked. It doesn't happen often in my experience but as it's down to the broadcaster it may depend which channels you are watching.
