The View's Sunny Hostin has raised eyebrows after revealing once again that she feels 'unsafe' around American flags. Hostin, 57, made the comments on Monday's episode of her ABC talk show after making a similar statement on the program back in 2021. 'I said this many, many years ago because this is my tenth year on the show,' she started. 'I said, there are times when I walk into a community and I see American flags all over the community and I suddenly feel unsafe,' she continued. 'Because there is a section of this country that has co-opted the American flag and they equate being an American or an American flag with white supremacy, and that should never be the symbol of white supremacy.' The topic came up as The View hosts were discussing a now-viral photo of a lone black woman on a train in Washington, D.C. surrounded by members of the Patriot Front, a white nationalist group. Hundreds of members of the group descended upon Washington over the weekend with American flags in hand for America's 250th celebration.

Hostin reflects on changing flag symbolism

'As a black woman, my lived experience in this country was embodied by a photograph that was taken,' she said, referring to the disturbing image. 'That for me was a defining image of modern America for black Americans,' she added. Back in 2021, Hostin said that she felt 'threatened' whenever she saw American flags juxtaposed with flags supporting President Trump. 'For many, the flag has been a symbol of freedom,' said co-host Whoopi Goldberg, before asking, 'Has it taken another meaning, Sunny?' 'Yes, it has,' said Hostin, before she explained how she feels that the meaning of the American flag has changed since Trump 'politicized' it.

Flags spark fear and controversy

'So yes, when I drive into a neighborhood and it's not July 4th and I'm not in a predominantly military household neighborhood and there are flags, Americans flags, everywhere alongside Trump flags, alongside flags with stars in a circle, I feel threatened because the message is very clear: It's a message of white supremacy, it's a message of racism, and it's a message of "their country, not my country",' she said. Last month, Hostin slammed Trump after he 'smirked' through a UFC fighter's viral post-fight speech about former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Hostin calls out UFC slur on air

Hostin abruptly brought up the UFC Freedom 250 card and heavyweight Josh Hokit's proclamation that Obama 'is a man' on The View, in the midst of a completely unrelated conversation about The New York Knicks. 'I do want to address the derogatory slur made about the former first lady Michelle Obama, because I think it's important to address. And we won't dignify what was said by repeating it, but you should look it up,' Hostin began. She went on to explain why she felt Hokit's remarks constituted systemic racism. 'The roots are in slavery,' the host fumed.

Hostin condemns sexist remarks and laughter

'Black women have been slurred and made to feel that they were unattractive, made to feel that they were masculine, made to feel that they were - they didn’t have the femininity that a white woman would have.' Hostin, 57, saw Hokit's comment as sexist as well. She also called out members of the crowd for 'laughing.' 'And the president of the United States smirked, and never addressed what was said. 'That is beneath the dignity of the office of the president of the United States, and it's beneath the dignity of the American people,' Hostin concluded.

Crowd reacts to fighter’s controversial remark

The fights were held outdoors on the White House's South Lawn on Sunday. Video of Hokit's speech that's been circulating online appears to show the president smiling near the end of the fighter's interview. In the clip, Hokit is heard telling Joe Rogan before walking off: 'Lastly, Michelle Obama is a man! Am I right, America?'. CNN's live coverage of the event also acknowledged that Trump 'appeared to show a half-smile seconds after the false remark.' It is unclear if Hokit's comments were the cause. A chorus of cheers and boos rang out immediately afterwards.
