I don't think Pangram was the sole source used for Thélyson Orélien's book. In fact the article says the decision was influenced by finding that he had plagiarised in the past and "It cited findings from "several credible researchers and journalists" indicating that the book was "in all likelihood, very largely the product of artificial intelligence" and also noted the accusations of plagiarism."

MisantropicPainforest, this is not the first time LLM generated books or short stories have gotten prestigious awards or received a lot of attention. It's happened again and again :(.

I guess to be fair, the Prix Goncoirt board might be aware they are doing the racism and enjoying it, so I should not assume they are just blinkered and morally weak.

I mean if the work is good and people enjoy it, what’s the objection? Is it that 99.9999% of LLMs that people are using are built by evil tech companies on stolen data? Or is it something else?

Weird that you acknowledge they are built on theft and fund evil but don't seem to see that as a deal breaker or even a problem.

Using AI to write fiction does little to serve marginalized people. These systems are trained on vast quantities of human language, including the racism, prejudices, and assumptions embedded in that material. Writing with AI therefore risks reinforcing the perspective of the dominant culture while further marginalizing voices that have historically been excluded from it.

I wanted to add that, though the objection from an intellectual and creative standpoint is simple as stated, that doesn't mean the situation is equally so. White men have been gatekeeping culture and its spoils for centuries through means foul and fouler, and that context is relevant!
