Belinda Tate is leaving the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) at Newfields after three years as executive director, local news outlet Mirror Indy reports. Today is her last day in the role. Tate was hired in 2023 by Colette Pierce Burnette, then CEO and president of Newfields, following a years-long reckoning with institutional racism that led to the resignation of Burnette’s immediate predecessor, Charles Venable. Four days after Tate took up her post, Burnette, the first Black woman to helm the institution, quit.

Neither Tate nor the IMA at Newfields offered a reason for her departure. A museum spokesperson told the IndyStar that the institution could not comment on her contract. Newfields CEO Le Monte Booker in a statement praised Tate for making a “significant and lasting impact” on the museum.

During her tenure at IMA at Newfields, Tate significantly elevated the profile of women artists and artists of color, through both acquisitions and programming. Among the exhibitions she shepherded were “Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks”; “The Message Is the Medium,” tracing the evolution of experimental contemporary art; and “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Kasseem ‘Swizz Beatz’ Dean and Alicia Keys,” featuring work by pathbreaking Black Artists.

“I am proud of the role I have played in advancing the Indianapolis Museum of Art and helping position it for its next chapter. I am deeply grateful to the many colleagues, trustees, artists, donors, and community partners who made this work possible,” said Tate in a statement. “I leave with great appreciation for the experience and friendships I have gained here, and I look forward to seeing all the great things that Newfields will accomplish in the years ahead.”

The museum said that it will launch a search for her replacement in the coming months.
