As questions linger about delays in updating the public after Sunday’s deadly mass shooting at Seattle Center, Gov. Bob Ferguson and U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal say they weren’t to blame.

A Seattle police public information officer told journalists Sunday night that a media briefing at the Center — held nearly five hours after the shooting — was delayed because officials were waiting for “dignitaries” who wanted to participate.

That seemed to point a possible finger at Ferguson and Jayapal, who, along with Mayor Katie Wilson, spoke at the briefing, which started just before 11 p.m.

Ferguson and Jayapal each said Monday they were not told until after 10 p.m. that there would be a news conference. As soon as they learned about it, each headed to Seattle Center.

The shooting left three people dead and four wounded, including a toddler. One arrest has been made, and police have said they are looking for a second suspect.

Ferguson was at a softball tournament with his daughter over the weekend, but was in Olympia by about 2 p.m. Sunday. He learned of the shooting at about 7 p.m. and “immediately drove to Seattle,” according to a statement from his office.

“He was at a location within 10 minutes of Seattle Center by 9 p.m. At approximately 10:10 p.m., the Governor received word there would be a media availability at Seattle Center. He immediately proceeded there and arrived at Seattle Center at approximately 10:30,” according to Ferguson’s statement.

Jayapal gave the same timeline in a statement through a spokesperson.

She was at home and participated in Zoom briefings at 8 and 9 p.m. about the incident. “She was notified of the press conference at 10:10 and immediately proceeded to the site from her home in Seattle,” said the statement.

At a City Hall news conference Monday morning, Wilson said the wait for the Sunday news conference was not due to any wait for the politicians.

“We are doing the best we can to provide accurate information in a timely manner, without increasing confusion,” Wilson said.

Seattle police had released only one public update on social media in the five hours after the shooting.
