Gumatat Gumitit Gospell (GGG/3G) is the project of Agha Praditya, a musician, composer, and sound artist from Denpasar, Bali. Active since 2017, GGG has developed through an ongoing interest in sound, space, and the experiences that shape the way we listen—from informal musical education and encounters with gamelan practices to architecture and everyday life in Bali.
Working primarily through electronic synthesis, GGG explores timbre, repetition, texture, and space without attempting to directly reproduce or represent tradition. Its music creates a space where experiences, memories, and influences can collide, overlap, and take on new forms.
Denpasar is noisy, dense, and constantly changing. This album moves through that tension: between ritual and infrastructure, memory and development, tradition and popular culture, sacred space and urban life. Rather than documenting the city literally, it turns its atmosphere into a distorted psychological landscape, where the traces of feudalism, colonialism, post-New Order development, tourism, and digital culture collide.
Drawing on the Balinese concept of Buana Alit–Buana Agung, the album brings the personal into contact with the social. Sound becomes a medium for examining how transformations of space also reshape the ways people feel, remember, and understand identity. Ritual sound, popular culture, street noise, and digital landscapes are not preserved in their original forms, but enlarged, distorted, and displaced until they produce a strange and hyperbolic urban reality.
The encounter with Baleganjur became one of the album's crucial points of departure. The changing architecture of the *banjar*—from open, porous spaces to constructions dominated by concrete, steel, and tile—has directly transformed the acoustic character of gamelan. Sound that once dispersed now reflects, accumulates, and seems trapped within the space. From this emerged two compositions where gamelan collides with electronic distortion and sub-bass: the sound of ritual warfare meeting the language of the club, the past crashing into contemporary infrastructure.
Even the use of samples from a gamelan considered “damaged” becomes part of the album's central proposition: a questioning of the boundaries between authentic and broken, traditional and contemporary, sacred and popular. Cultural identity is not treated as something fixed or intact, but as something continuously negotiated through transformations in space, technology, economy, and power.
Ultimately, this is neither a nostalgic portrait of a disappearing Bali nor a simple celebration of its modernisation. It is a record of a culture in mutation—where urban mythologies, infrastructure, ritual, consumption, and collective memory converge within an increasingly dense environment.
A sonic landscape of a Denpasar that has not yet finished becoming itself.
