CME Group plans to introduce baseball futures on 12 October, pending regulatory review, expanding its derivatives offering into professional sports through contracts linked to performance indexes covering Major League Baseball's 30 teams. The new products, developed in partnership with FutureSports, will track CME FutureSports Performance Indexes (FSPI) based on official league data. Trading will begin with the 2026 postseason, initially covering the four teams competing in the League Championship Series. The contracts will be available in standard and micro sizes, allowing market participants to take positions at different levels of exposure. Standard contracts will be valued at 10 times the underlying MLB index, while micro contracts will represent one-tenth of the index value.CME Group said the products would trade around the clock on a regulated exchange, offering transparent pricing, central clearing and equal market access.Tim McCourt, CME Group's senior managing director and global head of equities, foreign exchange and alternative products, said the contracts would apply established principles of price discovery and risk management to professional baseball, using indexes built on official data. The FSPI benchmarks convert official sports statistics into rules-based financial metrics. Their methodologies assign points to positive actions and deduct points for negative plays or setbacks, creating measurable indicators of team performance. The index frameworks are designed to align with the International Organisation of Securities Commissions' principles for financial benchmarks and are supported by published governance and oversight procedures. The contracts will be listed on CME and subject to its exchange rules. The launch represents a further extension of the exchange group's product range beyond traditional financial and commodity markets, which includes interest rates, equity indexes, foreign exchange, cryptocurrencies, energy, agriculture and metals.CME Group operates futures and options markets through its CME Globex platform and provides clearing services through CME Clearing, alongside fixed-income and foreign-exchange trading platforms BrokerTec and EBS.
