Amazon’s Retail Reckoning: Fresh Cuts in Stores Unit Signal Deeper Shift

Дата публикации: 08-10-2026 10:42:13

Amazon cut fewer than 1,000 corporate roles this week, mostly in its core Stores unit, even as Prime Big Deal Days unfolded. The move continues a multi-year effort to streamline retail operations after pandemic-era hiring and unsuccessful physical store experiments.

Amazon confirmed another round of job reductions this week. The e-commerce giant let go of fewer than 1,000 corporate employees. Most came from its Stores division. The timing raised eyebrows. These changes landed right as Prime Big Deal Days kicked into high gear.

Employees learned of their fate through emails. Internal Slack channels lit up with questions about severance and internal job postings. One group with nearly 37,000 members filled quickly with uncertainty. Some reached out to reporters. They shared screenshots and messages from the chaotic hours that followed.

“We’ve adjusted parts of our Stores business because we believe this structure will better enable us to deliver on our priorities.” So read the statement from an Amazon spokesperson to Reuters. The company called the number small. Affected teams included customer service, selling partner services, and some engineering roles. Staff in the U.S., India, and the U.K. felt the impact.

But this isn’t an isolated event. It forms part of a longer effort. Amazon overhired during the pandemic. Demand for online orders exploded then. Now the company trims layers. It seeks speed. CEO Andy Jassy has pushed this direction for years. The latest moves follow roughly 30,000 corporate job cuts that began last year and stretched into early 2026.

Those earlier reductions hit hard. Amazon eliminated about 14,000 positions in October 2025. Another 16,000 followed in January 2026. Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience and technology, explained the goal in a company blog. The company worked “to strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy.” She left room for more adjustments.

The Stores unit sits at the heart of Amazon’s retail engine. It oversees the main website. It manages Prime, private label brands, fashion, and consumables. Earlier this year the company cut about 200 roles there. CNBC reported the move focused on North America teams. The language sounded familiar. Amazon said then it adjusted the team structure to better deliver on priorities.

Physical retail experiments fared worse. In January 2026 Amazon announced it would close all Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores. The decision covered dozens of locations. Some converted to Whole Foods Market outlets. The company admitted it had not created a truly distinctive customer experience with an economic model for large-scale growth. The Wall Street Journal detailed the closures and the pivot toward online grocery delivery and Whole Foods expansion.

Amazon once bet big on physical stores. It acquired Whole Foods for $13.7 billion in 2017. It poured resources into cashierless technology. Just Walk Out systems promised frictionless shopping. Yet many locations struggled. High costs met uneven demand. The retreat marks a clear admission. Not every format scales.

Still, Amazon isn’t abandoning retail. Far from it. The company plans over 100 new Whole Foods stores. It invests heavily in same-day and ultra-fast delivery. Project Mercury calls for more than 1,000 new fulfillment centers aimed at same-day shipping by 2031. Proximity to customers matters. Walmart’s network of stores gives it an edge in instant availability. Amazon counters with warehouses placed closer to homes.

These workforce reductions coincide with massive capital spending elsewhere. Amazon prepares to spend a record $220 billion on data centers, chips, and infrastructure for artificial intelligence. Efficiency in mature businesses like retail funds that future bet. Managers took the biggest hit in recent rounds. Internal data reviewed by Business Insider showed more than 78% of certain cuts fell on L5 to L7 level managers, mostly in retail.

Jeff Bezos weighed in. In a recent Fox News interview he described the pandemic hiring as an “incredible, stressful period.” The company added staff rapidly when Americans stayed home and ordered online. Now it corrects course. Founder and executive chairman Bezos framed the ongoing trims as necessary adjustments.

Employees worry about what comes next. Some in AWS watch the retail cuts and wonder if their division faces similar pressure. The company continues hiring in strategic areas. AI talent. Cloud growth. Yet the message stays consistent. Bureaucracy must fall. Ownership must rise. Speed matters above all.

The Stores division changes touch selling partners too. Third-party sellers form a huge part of Amazon’s marketplace. Support teams help them navigate listings, advertising, and compliance. Reductions here could ripple outward. Merchants already manage complex operations. Any slowdown in support draws complaints.

Amazon’s retail media business grows fast despite the headcount pressure. Advertising revenue climbs. The company experiments with AI tools for sellers. New features let merchants manage orders from multiple platforms inside Seller Central. Agentic commerce raises questions about the future of discovery and ads. Analysts debate risks. Yet many see Amazon positioned to capture value even as shopping agents gain traction.

Prime Big Deal Days offered a stark backdrop. Shoppers hunted discounts. The promotion ran across multiple countries. Meanwhile, teams that power the site absorbed cuts. Operations continued. Orders shipped. But the contrast struck many observers. A leaner machine runs the biggest shopping events.

This pattern repeats across big tech. Cost discipline returns after years of expansion. Amazon leads in scale. Its 1.5 million-plus employees mostly work in warehouses. Corporate roles represent a smaller share. Yet those positions shape strategy and execution. Trimming them carries symbolic weight.

Analysts watch margins. Retail remains the largest segment. Improvements there lift overall profitability. AWS delivers high margins. Advertising grows quickly. The company balances investment in tomorrow’s technology with performance in today’s core business.

Challenges remain. Competition intensifies. Walmart pushes hard on grocery delivery and online sales. Shein and Temu pressure low-price segments. Amazon counters with faster shipping, better selection, and private brands. Execution depends on the people who remain.

The latest cuts appear small. Fewer than 1,000 people. In a company Amazon’s size the number registers as minor. Yet each round signals continued focus. Jassy’s mandate stays firm. Remove obstacles. Move faster. Innovate for customers.

Those affected receive support. Amazon offers severance. It gives time to search for internal roles. Many land elsewhere in the organization. Some leave. The process feels painful up close. From a distance it fits a broader story of adaptation.

Amazon built its empire on relentless iteration. Physical retail tested that approach. Some bets paid off. Others did not. The company learns. It shifts resources. Whole Foods grows. Online grocery expands. Stores that once carried the Amazon name fade.

The Stores division will look different after these changes. Flatter teams. Clearer accountability. Less overlap. Whether the new structure delivers better results will show in coming quarters. For now the message from leadership is clear. Priorities come first. Everything else adjusts.

And the pace of change shows no sign of slowing.
