Apple has announced the iPhone Duo, marking the company’s first entry into the foldable smartphone segment. The new device features a dual-screen design with a 7.6-inch foldable inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, powered by Apple’s new 2nm A20 Pro SoC.

The iPhone Duo also introduces a redesigned titanium enclosure, a custom hinge mechanism, dual-battery architecture, and iOS 27 features designed specifically for its foldable form factor. The foldable smartphone was announced alongside the flagship models: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max starting at ₹1,64,900.

When unfolded, the iPhone Duo measures as Apple’s thinnest smartphone to date and features a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR OLED display. When folded, the device uses a 5.4-inch outer display, which Apple says provides roughly 90% of the active screen area of its standard Pro-tier hardware.

Both displays share the same aspect ratio to provide visual continuity when moving between the folded and unfolded states. They support ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz, Always-On display, and up to 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness.

The inner display uses a matte nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections and make the folding crease less noticeable.

The inner screen also houses an under-display FaceTime camera, eliminating the need for a display cutout. A side button incorporates Touch ID for biometric authentication, while Apple has confirmed future Apple Pencil with USB-C support across both displays.

The iPhone Duo uses a Grade 5 titanium chassis with a 3D-printed hinge cover and internal structural ribbing. The hinge contains more than 100 components designed to manage folding resistance and support the displays.

The glass structure uses custom adhesives that allow internal layers to move during folding and unfolding, helping reduce bending stress. The rear panel is protected by Ceramic Shield, while the outer cover glass uses Ceramic Shield 2.

The device also carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro SoC, manufactured using a 2nm process. The chip features a six-core CPU with two performance and four efficiency cores, a seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Apple says the A20 Pro delivers up to 20% higher CPU performance compared with the A19 Pro and up to 40% faster graphics rendering. The Neural Engine is designed to double on-device AI computing capability, while unified memory bandwidth has increased by 50%.

A dedicated display engine allows the SoC to operate both displays simultaneously. For thermal management, Apple has integrated a custom vapor chamber directly with the SoC.

The iPhone Duo uses a split dual-battery architecture with dynamic energy rebalancing. Apple rates it for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display, and approximately 24 hours of mixed dual-display usage.

Wired charging can take the device to 50% in approximately 20 minutes using a 60W adapter or higher. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging can reach 50% in approximately 30 minutes.

The device is eSIM-only globally, with cellular connectivity handled by Apple’s C2 modem.

The rear camera setup includes a 48 MP Fusion Main camera with a 2x optical crop and sensor-shift stabilisation, alongside a 48 MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera with macro photography support.

Video recording supports 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 fps, while Cinematic mode can be adjusted after capture at up to 60 fps. The system also includes algorithmic audio isolation.

The foldable design enables several camera-focused features:

• Duo Preview: Shows the camera viewfinder on the outer display while framing subjects.
• Smart Take: Uses on-device scene analysis to automatically trigger the shutter when subjects pose.
• Rear Selfies: Allows users to take selfies using the rear camera while monitoring the framing through the outer display.
• Kid Cue & Duo FaceTime: Uses external animations to attract a child’s attention and routes secondary callers through the outer display during group conversations.

The iPhone Duo runs iOS 27, with the interface redesigned to make better use of the larger vertical display. Core interface elements, including the Dock, Dynamic Island and navigation controls, are shifted laterally.

The operating system introduces Split View for running two apps side-by-side, side-by-side app pairing and dual-window app instances. StandBy mode has also been expanded to work across both displays without continuous external power.

Apple has also introduced Siri AI through Apple Intelligence, providing a conversational interface that can use local device context. Other features include Spatial Reframing and integration with SynthID watermarking standards.

The iPhone Duo comes in Star White and Night Sky color options and is available with up to 2 TB of storage. The India price starts at ₹2,99,900 for the 256 GB model.
