At Dow Jones, we believe in Authentic Intelligence. It’s a simple idea: artificial intelligence is only as good as the human judgment, licensed content and rigorous standards behind it. Algorithms can process information in milliseconds. They can’t verify a source, weigh context or catch misinformation before it reaches a boardroom. Our journalists, researchers and data analysts can.
That belief shows up in three principles that guide every AI decision we make.
We don’t build AI products on content we don’t have the right to use. Through Factiva, we’ve secured explicit consent to use content from more than 8,500 licensed sources with generative AI, paying publishers fairly for work that fuels trustworthy outputs.
We show our work. When our journalists build AI models to analyze data, they publish their methodology alongside the story. When we use AI to translate market-moving news into Korean, Japanese and French for readers around the world, we say so.
Every one of our AI tools has a human checkpoint. Our Factiva AI features link every output straight back to its original source. Our AI-generated story summaries get reviewed by an editor before they ever reach a reader. It’s about making sure speed never comes at the expense of being right.
These principles were pioneered by our AI Steering Committee that spans our newsrooms, our commercial teams, our technologists and our data operations, built specifically so that no single business unit calls the shots on something this consequential.
Over the coming months, leaders from across Dow Jones will use this space to share how they’re putting these principles into practice in their own corners of the company. AI looks different depending on whether you’re reporting a story, screening third parties or pricing commodities. What won’t change is the standard we hold it to.
