Not lost in the Maple Leafs’ come-from-behind overtime victory against Nashville on Tuesday was a milestone night for Jack Roslovic.

Roslovic’s first goal with Toronto couldn’t have been more timely, as it tied the game 4-4 to send it to overtime, where captain Auston Matthews finished it off for the Leafs.

“Not only (being with) a new team, but the start of the year, you always want to get going early and get juiced up a bit,” Roslovic said after the game. “It’s nice to see one go in.”

In signing Roslovic to a two-year contract in July that carries an average annual value of $4 million US, the expectation was that the 29-year-old Columbus native would add an offensive spark to the lineup. He’s coming off back-to-back 20-goal seasons and, considering his placement in the Leafs’ top six, there’s every reason to believe he can hit 20 goals again.

Roslovic also made a fine play to help set up Gavin McKenna’s first National Hockey League goal, stripping Predators veteran Ryan O’Reilly of the puck in the Nashville end to get it to Matthews, who then fed the rookie.

As the Leafs flew west on Wednesday afternoon for a three-game trip that begins on Thursday night in Vegas against the Golden Knights, we’d assume coach Jim Hiller was contemplating his forward lines.

Of the necessary switches that came against Nashville as the Leafs fell behind 3-0, Hiller had Matthews between Roslovic and William Nylander.

Having Matthews and Nylander together on a line is, as Hiller is aware, a tantalizing option.

“The time has to be right because you don’t want to overweight one line,” Hiller said. “They’re really strong players, and you like to have a little bit of balance.

“We’ll have to decide if we start the next game like that.”

John Tavares was flanked by Easton Cowan and Kirill Marchenko in the new look, while McKenna skated with Nick Paul and Colton Sissons.

Roslovic is open to whatever Hiller decides. No matter what, there should be no shortage of the potential for scoring goals.

“Four games in, there’s some kinks to work out and it was great to mix them up a bit,” Roslovic said. “I think we’re still trying to find the identity of being able to play all 60 (minutes), but everyone’s getting a good feel of the way our team is going to be successful.”
