The Hidden Costs of Retiring Near the Grandkids Nobody Mentions Until the First Holiday

Retirees moving near their grandkids budget the house and the taxes but almost never budget the role itself, and the first holiday season has a way of presenting the full bill at once.

Retirees who relocate to be near their adult children usually price the move carefully, comparing home prices, property taxes, and everyday expenses. Almost nobody prices the role itself: the running cost of being the grandparent who lives fifteen minutes away. That cost comes in many small pieces, and many of them appear together during the first holiday season.

Your Kids’ Address Sets the Housing Bill First

When adult children choose their address, their market sets the price. The Bureau of Economic Analysis puts regional price levels at 110.72 in California and 86.937 in Arkansas, against a national average of 100. Young families often cluster in school-district suburbs, which can cost more than age-restricted communities. Plenty of retirees upgrade to a bigger house so everyone fits at Christmas, raising property tax, insurance, utilities, and maintenance all year for a handful of full-house weekends. With the Case-Shiller national index at 337.3, up 1.9% year over year, that extra square footage isn’t getting cheaper.

Small Receipts That Become a Real Line Item

The local grandparent usually becomes the default host. A survey of 1,200 grandparents by The Senior List found they spend about $4,000 a year on grandchildren, covering gifts, clothing, dining out, and extracurricular activities. Another 10% give $10,000 or more. That number grows with each new grandchild and soaks up in-between costs: school fundraisers, soccer fees, cleats that don’t fit by spring.

Transportation is the cost most people leave out. AAA puts the 2025 cost of owning and operating a new car at $11,577 a year, about 77 cents a mile at 15,000 miles. Each extra trip costs less than that average: fuel runs about 13 cents a mile, and maintenance, repair, and tires add 11.04 cents. Three 20-mile round-trip pickups a week add up to 3,120 miles a year, or roughly $750, before counting the extra wear that moves up the next car purchase.

Financial Support Is Where Generosity Becomes Risk

Direct support for adult children can be the highest cost. AARP research finds almost 75% of parents give their grown children financial help. Living close makes the need visible. A grandparent across town is more likely to be asked to help with expenses such as car repairs. In The Senior List survey, 1 in 5 grandparents said they feel pressured to give more than they can afford, and 10% had taken on debt or delayed retirement to help. Money given away early in retirement misses decades of compounding.

When the Kids Relocate and the House Stays

Adult children move for work. Census Bureau data from 2016 shows 11.2% of Americans moved within a single year, while 20.2% of all movers gave a job-related reason. Buying a bigger house in a pricier neighborhood because it was close to one address creates a problem if the kids leave: the reason for the location leaves with them, and the costs stay. Renting for the first year or two lets the neighborhood, the drive, and the kids’ job stability prove themselves before anything is permanent.

What Makes These Moves Work, and What to Budget

Moves that tend to work often share three traits: money expectations are discussed before the move, the grandparent has friends and routines in the new town, and spending happens by calculated decision. Hosting can rotate to the kids’ house or a restaurant, and the home can be sized for ordinary weeks.

Combined, about $4,000 for grandchildren and $750 for driving and holiday hosting costs puts the role at about $5,640 a year. Add a planned support amount of $3,000 and the total comes to $8,640. At a 4% withdrawal rate (we made the full case for rethinking that benchmark in a free guide), covering that spending takes about $216,000 in portfolio assets on top of the base plan.

Before the current house goes on the market, write down the annual cost of being the local grandparent, with support included, as its own line in the budget. If the portfolio can fund roughly $216,000 beyond the base plan, the move works. If it can’t, reduce the house, hosting, or support until it can.
