Every week, the American Tinnitus Association fields calls and emails from people asking about tinnitus products they found online that claim to cure tinnitus or offer significant relief. We also regularly hear from people trying to return a product to us because our phone number was listed, without our knowledge or consent, as a point of contact.
ATA neither sells nor endorses any products. Our work is grounded in scientific evidence and in the understanding that tinnitus is complex, has many causes, and involves underlying mechanisms that researchers are still working to fully map. There is no magic pill or treatment that cures tinnitus. Given its complexity, future treatments will likely need to target specific tinnitus subtypes, similar to how different cancers require different treatment strategies based on their type. Any product claiming a single cause or cure, directly or through careful wording that implies it, calls for buyer beware, caveat emptor. So, hit pause before hitting “buy” for anything that seems too good to be true.
Red FlagsClaims and LanguageReport fake testimonials, manipulative sales tactics, and fraudulent business practices, even if you haven’t lost money, to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC does not resolve individual cases but uses reports to investigate and bring cases about fraud, scams, and bad business practices.
Food and Drug Administration, for false health claims and negative side effects
To check whether others have already flagged a company and to add your own scam report to help warn others, see the Better Business Bureau Scam Tracker at bbb.org/scamtracker. BBB is not a regulatory body, but it’s a useful resource for helping to flag a company with questionable business practices.
Your state Attorney General’s consumer protection officeMany states pursue health fraud and supplement cases directly. It’s worth filing a report with the state attorney general’s office alongside a federal report, not instead of one. To find your state’s consumer protection office information, see https://www.usa.gov/stateconsumer.
