This Vintage Porsche 944 Conversion Is Way Cooler Than a New 911

  • If you're growing tired of Porsche 911 restomods, here's something even cooler.
  • Called the GT-K44, this shooting brake conversion can be done on any 944, regardless of powertrain.
  • The conversion isn't cheap, but there's an immense amount of hand-crafted quality here.

A shooting brake is one of those old-fashioned terms that was born in the era of the horse-drawn wagon and briefly flourished in the coachbuilt era. Properly, it is a car that exists somewhere between a station wagon and a coupe, with two-door styling but also hatchback practicality. Basically, it's a genteel sporting car that can also fit a couple of engraved shotguns for a day spent blasting pheasants out of the sky.

But the joy of a shooting brake is that you don't need to use it for hunting—its increased practicality lends itself to everything from ferrying a set of slicks to a track day, to just carrying your dog around. If you're a fan of vintage Porsches, you can't just turn a 911 into a hatchback, not with that flat-six engine in the way. There is, however, the 944 waiting in the wings.

CarPoint, a German specialist, calls its 944-based shooting brake the GT-K44, which is not a particularly evocative name. However, just look at it in all its Oak Green over Pasha-pattern interior, looking like it should have come from the factory this way.

This is not the first customized transaxle Porsche created, as there were several made in-period. One such example was a 924 Turbo sporting brake built by Günter Artz, a Volkswagen dealer who once rebodied a Porsche 928 as a Volkswagen Golf hatchback. The 924 was owned and driven for a while by CarPoint's founder, Andreas Freund, who, decades later, has decided to provide a similar treatment for the 944.

To be clear, this is not a restomod car. CarPoint's services are very much BYO 944, and the car will retain its factory powertrain. This proof-of-concept car is running a 3.0-liter four-cylinder with 211 horsepower on tap, but you can have the same thing done to a more powerful 944 Turbo.

The cost is both quite a lot and also strangely reasonable considering how much work is required. Including all the labor of cutting and welding the body, fitting new custom glass in the rear, refinishing the interior with new materials and a custom-fitted headliner, and new paint, you're looking at the equivalent of about $113,000.

That figure plus the cost of buying a mechanically sound 944 adds up to close to the price of a brand-new Porsche 911. Yet, imagine how divergent the experiences are of showing up at 2027's Monterey Car Week in either a silver late-model 911 or this glorious creation. The GT-K44 is the clear charisma winner, and if you have the means, as Ferris Bueller once said, we highly recommend picking one up.
