SO MANY FAMOUS FALL FILMS… have a bewitching habit of showing handsome habitats that are rather haunting. These are the large old houses that appear in mysteries, yes, and the other sorts of movies that take a viewer past old tomes and beautiful artworks that were painted centuries ago. Finding such fabled locations in the Golden State, particularly those spots that are dressed and ready for seasonal revelries, can be a bit of a sticky wicket, but not if you make your way to Woodside during the days, or rather evenings, leading up to Halloween and the first day of November. Just be sure to reach Filoli Historic House & Gardens in time for Nightfall, when all sorts of glowing pumpkins and October-style sights charmingly reign.
This “Nightfall” comes with plenty of October atmosphere; visit Filoli in Woodside most every evening in October, except for Oct. 8, for the seasonal splendor; it’s also open Nov. 1.
NIGHTFALL, is, yes, the name of the sizable property’s autumn event, an after-sunset experience full of not-intense sights and bites that are tasty (and not from some vampiric visitor). The Meadow Harvest Party is the spot for “(g)ames, live music, food and drink, and thousands of pumpkins” while the jack-tastic energy extends to the Filoli’s forest-y Redwood Trail Into the Woods. This isn’t a mere flight of fancy in the naming department; real trees add to the atmosphere, and, just maybe, the occasional slug, too (they’re giants, they glow, and they’re ready for photos). As for the house itself? There’s “A Mystery in Every Room,” with dolls and other decorative items summoning the spirit of All Hallows Eve. But you don’t need to wait for the end of October: Tickets are available nightly, save Oct. 8.
