The project will address accessibility, drainage and tree cover issues while maintaining the Pit’s vibrant feel.

The University will soon address long-standing physical challenges at the Pit, a fixture of Carolina campus life for more than 60 years, in preparation to support everyday life and major campus events for generations to come.
A true campus meeting point known to be filled with students, faculty, staff and visitors, the Pit faces several issues that can no longer be ignored. The drainage system has failed, often leaving standing water. The brick steps limit accessibility, and an expanding student body has outgrown a gathering place designed for a much smaller community.
In the new design, the sunken pit will be replaced with a single, flat landscape to improve pedestrian flow and expand shaded areas. The UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees approved the plans at its budget, finance and infrastructure committee meeting Sept. 23, and construction will begin next year.
The Pit was constructed in 1969 as a brick-over of a construction yard. Since then, it’s become a mainstay of Carolina campus life, hosting speakers, student organization tables and events like FallFest.
Student, faculty and staff surveys and feedback sessions have informed design work and have been underway since 2024. Construction logistics will be designed to minimize disruption to the highest-trafficked area on campus.
Alumni Center to see major addition and renovationsA new welcome center will establish a clear point of arrival for prospective student visits and campus tours.
Trustees approved plans for an addition to the George Watts Hill Alumni Center, which would then house both Undergraduate Admissions and the UNC Visitors Center. The Alumni Center, Carolina Club and new welcome center would together create an inviting experience that welcomes prospective students, engages alumni and reinforces a lifelong connection to Carolina.
The project will preserve the area’s wooded landscape while creating outdoor spaces for events. Adjacent to the Rams Head Parking Deck, the new welcome center will also provide easy access for visitors to all spaces.
