On Friday, 25 September 2026, the Academy of Sciences campus in Prague’s Spořilov district opened its doors to the public as part of Science Night. The evening dedicated to science, experiments and public engagement attracted visitors of all ages. This year’s theme was Communication.

Throughout the evening, visitors could take part in and explore a wide range of experiments while learning more about the research carried out at the Academy of Sciences institutes located in Spořilov. The programme included demonstrations in the laboratories, such as an experiment with gelatin illustrating the tearing of the Earth’s crust, an interactive sandbox, the Planeterrella aurora simulator, experiments focusing on planetary magnetic fields and their interaction with the solar wind, sounds from space, LED sphere light effects, a fire tornado and rainbow experiments. Everyone could create their own earthquake or listen to audiovisual compositions illustrating seismic activity in Iceland.

The main lecture programme took place in the auditorium of the Institute of Geophysics of the CAS. At 7 p.m., Petr Kolínský from the Institute of Geophysics of the CAS opened the evening with a lecture entitled The Structure of the Earth: The AdriaArray Large Seismic Experiment. He introduced a project aimed at gaining a more detailed understanding of the structure of the Earth’s interior using an extensive network of seismic stations.

His lecture was followed by Prof. Ondřej Santolík from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the CAS, who presented The Music of the Spheres. The programme continued with a lecture by Jiří Svoboda from the Astronomical Institute of the CAS, Black Holes – From Original Ideas to Modern Observations. We concluded the evening with a screening of the pilot episode of the Genius series by National Geographic, focusing on the life and work of Albert Einstein, introduced by Jiří Svoboda, who served as a scientific advisor during the production.

We would like to thank everyone who joined us in Spořilov, as well as all the colleagues who prepared the programme and contributed to making the evening possible.
